NEW YORK -- The New York Mets plan to buy out left-hander Johan Santana's 2014 option in the next couple of days while leaving open at least a small possibility of bringing back the two-time Cy Young Award winner on a modest deal.

The Mets will pay Santana a $5.5 million buyout to avoid being responsible for a $25 million option for next season, according to an industry source. The buyout needs to be exercised within five days of the World Series, although the Mets likely will not wait that long.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals exercised their $13.5 million option on right-hander James Shields on Thursday after he anchored one of the league's best starting rotations last season.

#Yankees announce re-signing of Jeter to one-year, $12M contract.

Jeter could have opted for free agency if he did not accept a $9.5 million club option, which the #Yankees bumped to $12 to keep him.

Key point RT @FeinsandNYDN: #Yankees save a couple mil in luxury tax on Jeter. Had he triggered option, AAV of last deal would've been $14M+

This should tell you where his market lies.

Will Yankees make $14.1 million qualifying offer to Granderson? @JonHeymanCBS reports they're still deciding. http://cbsprt.co/HzgWb9

They want the compensation, they can afford to take the risk, but I really don't think they want him back. That's the hold up. Still, I think they'll end up taking it.

If he was worth close to $14 million they would tender him in a heartbeat, because even if he took it, they could trade him, and get something out of it. It probably means his price is more like $10 million annually, versus 14 or more.

This is the time period when we hear endless reports of teams being interested in each free agent. But the qualifying offer clubs may tender limits markets. “The value of draft choices is greater than ever,” says one GM. “If a team signs a player who has been made a qualifying offer, the team not only loses the draft pick, but the money for that slot.

“So,” says the GM, “if the Dodgers signed a free agent who’d been, made the qualifying offer, they lose the pick and the $1.2-$1.5M slot off their total draft allotment. That will restrict some free agents.”

Because pitchers like Ricky Nolasco and Matt Garza were traded in mid-season, they are not subject to draft compensation. “So they’re going to do better than an Ervin Santana, if the Royals make the qualifying offer.”

But, suggests several general managers, the Dodgers can avoid the loss of their number one pick and the slot money if they trade for David Price and get Masahiro Tanaka from Japan. “They have the minor league talent to get Price,” says one GM. “If they would trade Corey Seager and Julio Urias (the 17-year old lefthanded pitcher) and a couple out of Zach Lee, Joc Pederson or Chris Withrow, it would get it done. Then if they post $80M for Tanaka, they could have a rotation with four number ones and a number two with Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Price, Tanaka and Hyun-Jin Ryu. But if they were to trade for Price, they’d need the draft pick to fill holes in their development system.”

Jays unlikely to make qualifying offer to starting pitcher Johnson

November 1, 2013 3:40 pm ET

The Blue Jays are said unlikely to make the $14.1 million qualifying offer to right-hander Josh Johnson, though a final determination apparently hasn't been made.

The need for starting pitching is such that even Johnson's off year (2-8, 6.20) wouldn't necessarily deter them. He's still only 29, and he's a two-time All-Star and former ERA champion with the Marlins. What's giving them pause is that he finished the season inactive -- though he's said to be healthy now.

Johnson was shut down with a strained right forearm and missed the final few weeks of the season, but agent Matt Sosnick said Johnson will start throwing in 10 days. Sosnick also said, "he's 100 percent healthy."

With no draft choice attached to him assuming no qualifying offer is made, he might be able to get close to the $14.1 million as a free agent.
