That is the least risky boast ever. This is the Royals. Every move they make, they regret.

I disagree trade below worked out great for KC.

July 29, 2012: Royals acquire right-handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie from Rockies for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez.

He was 10-0 with a 2.21 ERA. Sanchez struggled with the Rockies.

Dave Cameron made a great point in his Vargas write up...who would you rather have, Jason Vargas at 4 years, $32 million or Tim Lincecum at 2 years, $35 million?

Lincecum.

Cubs got Kottaras.

For cash considerations. He would have been a great platoon guy at C.

Now that Youk sucks, Kottaras is truly the Greek God of walks.

Does somebody that cheated really deserve that much money??

Even taking cheating out of the equation, does Peralta deserve that kind of money?

Dude is 1 year removed from a pretty s***ty season, and it isn't like he is young

He already served his unpaid suspension according to the rules, if the owners still think he can hit, why shouldn't he get paid?

I wish there was a rule where players caught with PEDs can only have a contractual AAV no higher than their highest career AAV, and for a max of 3 years at a time, to prevent a team from offering say.... $5M a year, but for 25 years, for a guy that may have otherwised signed a 5 year deal for $25M per year.

The "boy, Melky Cabrera looks like he could be a great value signing if he can hit like he did before his suspension" theory didn't work out very well because that great hitting season was steroid-powered.

I agree and am just as dumbfounded by the signing as others are. But unless they add extra rules to further punish cheaters, he "deserves" as much money as he can convince a dumb GM to pay him.

Melky was pretty unlucky last year. His HR/FB was 3.2% (compared to 7% in his career, not comparing that to the previous two years of 9.8% and 10.7%) while his GB, LD, FB, and K rates did not really fluctuate in a non-conducive, talent-reducing way. On top of that, he was hurt - he had a knee/leg injury and had a benign tumor removed from his lower back in September of last season.

If you want, you can make the assumption that Braun was still using last year, but he didn't test positive and his numbers were still pretty damn respectable.

Reading this i couldn't help but be reminded of how naive I was in, what was it, 2004, when Giambi had a major issue liek that, a thyroid or something like that, and I thought it was because of the fact they had to play their opening game overseas and he came back sick and spent the whole season collecting a huge paycheck while hurt.

As I recall, he had a pretty sizable tumor on or in his stomach. He is also an example of a guy who came back and played pretty damn well after supposedly getting clean and he's had a pretty incredible career overall.

He OPS's droped 3 to 400 points post steroids. I'd say he is the perfect fear of what can happen post steroids.

I think his career follows a pretty typical path. His final 2 seasons in Oakland were the beginning of his prime years - 29 and 30. In New York, between the ages of 31 and 35, he put up 1.034, .939, .720 (injury year), .975, .971. He missed time again as a 36 year old and put up a .790 OPS, but then bounced back at 37 to put up .876. He's been pretty mediocre to bench worth since that point - not surprising for a 38 year old - but for 5 out of 7 years in New York, he was very good.

FWIW, Melky was always s***ty until that season. Peralta has had a smattering of decent seasons before last year, so if they think he only used last season then they might think that it at least isn't an impossibility that he has had good offensive seasons drug-free before.

Of course, the obvious comeback is that it's impossible to know that he didn't use previously. In fact, you could really make a good case that he juiced in 2008, maybe lost his supplier, struggled for a couple years, had a contract up after 2011 so he juiced for that season to get an extension after finding Biogenesis, had a down season in 2012 when they went down in flames...and then finally had a good 2013.

Or maybe they know it was just a flukey paper trail that got him caught, and he should be able to cheat to the level he always has without getting caught again, unless he's really, really dumb about it.
