The Cubs are set to announce WBBM-AM 780 as the team's new flagship radio partner.

Sources close to the situation confirmed Tuesday night that the Cubs have signed a long-term deal with the CBS-owned station to carry the team’s games beginning next season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but sources said it also involves promotion with other CBS Radio stations in Chicago.

The team is expected to announce the new broadcast partnership formally on Thursday, according to sources.

The move to CBS marks the end of a 90-year relationship with WGN-AM 720. The Tribune Co.-owned station reportedly was losing money on the broadcasts and chose to exercise an option to reopen its radio contract with the team last fall. Station executives cited low ratings after losing 197 games over the last two seasons as contributing to revenue declines.

For now. I think the writing is on the wall for the Sox to be elsewhere after 2015 with the Cubs going to 670.

Yea, I dont expect them to remain on 670 after 2015. Maybe in a twist they end up on WGN. But, I'd bank on 1000.

That sucks for me, because I always have issues getting 1000. Their transmission sucks... and I'm in Hoffman Estates!

Answered a park survey Sunday where a couple of the questions asked out of the blue were regarding my interest in FM radio. It wouldn't surprise me if they ended up on 'GN FM and brought the Bulls with them.

87.7 makes a lot of sense for a darkhorse bid.

I cant imagine any major sports team willingly moving themselves to a station that a lot of people can't access.

The Bulls flirted with FM, then jumped back to AM. Honestly, AM offers greater coverage of the Chicago area. If MLB/NBA allowed stations to stream games on the web like the NHL allows, then that's different. but, they dont.

The Game 87.7 ‏@gamechicago 47m

de Castro: We have a lot of empathy for our listeners who grew up with the Cubs on WGN. The Cubs are in our DNA.

de Castro: This year we've had three major sponsors leave Cubs baseball.

de Castro: The Cubs opted for a cash-only deal. That's not a financially sustainable model for us.

de Castro: We presented the Cubs with several different options, including revenue-sharing and equity ownership.

de Castro: We lose millions on #Cubs and we were willing to continue to do that, but not as many millions as the #Cubs expected us to.

Do that many people still listen to baseball games on the radio? let alone when a team sucks that bad.

I listened to full sox game on way down to st. louis, and have to say, I was laughing and really enjoyed it. I think I'm actually a Farmer/DJ fan, they are just so awkward together but in a fun way.

That said, I'll listen if I'm running errands during game, but mostly watch tv.

WGN wants out of sports game totally. I do not see the Sox going there.

Stupid Astros, why didn't they take Bryant #1 last year? Bryant seems to be one of the better hitting prospects in a long time.

You act like they'll actually bring him up. Wouldn't want to excite their fan base or anything. Where would Olt play???

The Cubs would be stupid to bring him up anytime before next June. Absolutely no reason to start someone's clock until they get some pitching.

My thinking is they have a long term plan and should do what Houston is doing. Bring these kids up to play over the hacks they have. If they can't win with them in 4-6 years, than you move on or keep em.

There is still a learning curve and they need to know these kids will pan out. Waiting for the plan to all unfold at once is risky.

How's that worked for them in the past 100 years?

Or try to get more Springer/Singleton (offered to Dominguez and Grossman as well) "pre-service" contracts out there...of course, Boras is already onto the Astros and has been quoted extensively about this issue, and is Bryant's agent.

The Cubs have another problem, waiting for Almora and Soler will put them into 2016 or 2017. There's no way they can afford to have a five plus year rebuild before they can arguably be competitive (and even then, it's not a given).

So is selling all of your good players and rebuilding from the ground up.
