greg775
Amazing how the Royals' patience is paying off. Or their cheapness. Maybe they didn't want to pay Yost and his replacement, but suddenly KC looks like the class of this division. 10 wins in last 14 games with the bats waking up and the rotation looking very good. Would you bet your house (double your money) on them to overtake the Tigers? Remember, they simply have beaten the last last-place White Sox (and haven't faced Sale/Danks) and Indians and a so-so Yankees' team (although that's a breakthrough of sorts anytime they can take a series from NY). Remember, they simply have beaten the last last-place White Sox (and haven't faced Sale/Danks) and Indians and a so-so Yankees' team (although that's a breakthrough of sorts anytime they can take a series from NY). They are 0-6 vs. Detroit so this series is crucial for them. It's true KC plays fairly lousy at home. But I would say if KC splits this series with Detroit or takes 3 of 4, yes it's Royals time and they finally make the playoffs.

caulfield12
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jun 16, 2014 -> 06:59 PM) 7 runs given up by verlander today wow lol It's not a surprise. Look at his last six weeks' worth of starts. He's just not getting enough swing and misses or strikeouts anymore, even though his fastball has been 93-95 and he's been able to dial it up to 96-97 in critical situations. Seems he's lost his confidence. Which is bound to happen when you were the best pitcher on the planet for five years and then all of a sudden the ball's not leaving your hand the same way but nothing feels physically wrong. 10-2, Royals piling it on. Up to Scherzer now to hold onto first place and stop the Royals' winning streak. He showed up on Thursday against Sale, would be shock if he didn't win again this time. Yet another compelling reason why he's going to get paid. Edited June 17, 2014 by caulfield12

And that $30 million per year extension doesn't kick in until next season. Double yikes. Game story with lots of quotes from Detroit Free Press. http://www.freep.com/article/20140617/SPOR...ustin-verlander Monday marked the second straight start — and fourth overall — in his downturn in which Verlander gave up little until mid-game, then surrendered at least four runs in an inning. What does he make of that? “Good question,” he said. He declined to offer any theories. Here are a few: Strikeouts don’t rescue him from jams as they used to. And whether it’s because of age or his annual workload or both, Verlander’s begins to lose his stuff earlier in innings than he used to. So if he gets in a jam, he’s more vulnerable to giving up the big hit than he used to be. His downturn began in mid-May when Baltimore — after being blanked for four innings — scored five two-out runs in the fifth off him, the last three on Nelson Cruz’s homer. Verlander will get as much time as he needs to work out of his trouble. Ausmus said, as if anyone would doubt it, that he will keep taking his turn. “There is nothing to do but stay confident, move forward and turn the page,” Verlander said. They are just on a hot streak right now. If they can do it for the majority of the year then maybe they turned it around.. But most teams could on a hot streak at some point in the year. I think I remember them doing it last year when Brett was named hitting coach but a few weeks later they went back to be the Royals
Soxfest
It took the CG master Scherzer almost 40 pitches to get 1 out in the 2nd. KC 7-
caulfield12
Were any houses wagered on this one? It would have taken some cojones to bet against Scherzer in DET.

From my untrained eye, he's not throwing hard and he's throwing meat up there quite often. So we add Verlander to the list of a guy signed to a contract and the team almost immediately regretting it? My god, baseball owners are so dumb to pay these long term deals. Doesn't Verlander make something like 24 million a year?

According to research by STATS LLC, it’s the most runs ever given up in consecutive games by teammates who have each won the Cy Young Award. Dick Allen
Verlander got booed off the mound the other night in Detroit. I wonder if Scherzer did as well. I also wonder if Scherzer's insurance covers poor performance along with injury. It has to be expensive. The Tigers are going to be just as ugly as the rest of Detroit in a couple of years. caulfield12
One would never have thought that Victor Martinez would be one of, if not THE best, hitter on the 2014 Detroit Tigers 2-3 years ago. Saying that, we would have thought they'd be a 108-54 type team every year....with Cabrera, Fielder, Austin Jackson coming into his prime, Alex Avila looking like a potential All-Star...and of course the pitching staff. It's amazing how things can go south so quickly when one or both of your elite/superstar pitchers starts to break down or lose their confidence. Verlander and Scherzer and Nathan are pulling the whole team down at this point, with only Sanchez/Porcello/Smyly as counterweights.

Yes a stupid one, but he said "I'm just kidding" immediately. I mean it was instant. He shouldn't have gone there, but geezus, lighten up America. Or just acknowledge it was a bad joke and move on.
