Balta1701
Well, that's how the Yankees responded to missing the playoffs last time...sign a couple $100 million deals and win the series the next year.

Jake
This has a high probability of being a big problem in the future. I see no way they sign Cano at this point.
southsider2k5
The first name that came to mind with those numbers is Carl Crawford.
Balta1701
QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 09:00 PM) I see no way they sign Cano at this point. Swapping Cano for Ellsbury probably makes the Yankees worse, not better. What was the point of this signing if they can't keep their biggest bat? Jake
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 08:04 PM) Swapping Cano for Ellsbury probably makes the Yankees worse, not better. What was the point of this signing if they can't keep their biggest bat? Also getting McCann and pursuing Stephen Drew and Omar Infante, things that probably aren't possible if they are spending on Cano. That is, unless they know something about the ARod case that we don't...
LittleHurt05
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 09:04 PM) Swapping Cano for Ellsbury probably makes the Yankees worse, not better. What was the point of this signing if they can't keep their biggest bat? They claim the still have room for Cano. Makes me think that they are expecting to not have a certain 3b on their payroll next season due to suspension.
southsider2k5
MLB @MLB 5m .@BryanHoch confirms: @JacobyEllsbury, @Yankees agree to 7-year, $153M deal; includes 8th-year option that could raise total value to $169M.

That is, unless they know something about the ARod case that we don't... Somehow if they lose Cano, those signings don't impress me at all. Between losing Cano and losing guys from their pitching staff, they'd be spending a whole lot of money to barely tread water in a tough division. spiderman
I had thought the theme of the Yankees off-season would be able to get under the luxury tax - was that just wrong, or does signing McCann / Elisbury / Cain somehow still work? Soxfest
QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 10:59 PM) I had thought the theme of the Yankees off-season would be able to get under the luxury tax - was that just wrong, or does signing McCann / Elisbury / Cain somehow still work? Maybe more to come. A source tells Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter) that the Yankees not only believe they've got room for Ellsbury and Robinson Cano or Shin-Soo Choo, they still plan on signing at least one starting pitcher as well. witesoxfan
Guess I'm one of the few who thinks Ellsbury will age really well. Glad the Sox didn't sign him, but that's a fine deal and I expect him to earn his money.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 12:34 AM) The A-Rod suspension is one of the best things to ever happen to them Yep. As soon as they can, they will move to void that contract, and the next legal battle begins. Arod's team has been laying a defense for that all along. This isn't about the suspension, it is about protecting the last four years of that contract.

Glad the Sox didn't sign him, but that's a fine deal and I expect him to earn his money. I agree with you, I think Ellsbury is going to be a very good player for years to come. He's going to kill with that porch in RF. Edited December 5, 2013 by CWSpalehoseCWS
