Gene Honda Civic
10:30 news reports that Cotts NOT Buehrle is starting tomorrow. This move just doesn't make any sense to me.
Bmr31
This move just doesn't make any sense to me. Makes perfect sense to me. The yank game is no more important than the tiger game, whats the difference????

Rex Hudler
No one seems to know for sure......... Cooper did say on the Sox site that Cotts would likely go if the Sox won the first two games against the Yanks. The bottom line is that the Sox should do what Manuel and Cooper feel is in the best interest of the Sox in the long term, not what Mark wants or not whether they fear Neal is ready or not. They need to be thinking in terms of the season, not this series. I am not going to profess I know which option is best, but that is the way it should be handled. The long term interests of the team must come first. We'll soon see which option they think is best.

What makes no sense is all of this see-saw s*** about who is starting. If they don't have a damned clue, then they should have just listed TBA. I say hell with this yo-yo crap! clujer420
Agreed. Maybe they want to play with the Yanks so they can't prepare Both Cotts and Buehrle are lefties who don't throw very differently in terms of speed (Cotts is slightly faster, but it's not like it's Sabathia and Jamie Moyer), so I doubt they're f***ing with the Yankees. I'd rather have the Sox win in NY than in Det, simply because in the playoffs, we ain't gonna have to win a game in Comerica Park. Yankee Stadium, on the other hand, could be where we play in the 1st round if we make it.

It makes no difference who pitches tomorrow.
greg775
Why Cotts? were we gonna rush mark b on one less day between starts? I have a sick feeling we're gonna give up on game three and gear for the tiger series. but who knows? we might surprise. I won't rip JM tonight ... not after another big win. clujer420
It makes no difference who pitches tomorrow. Don't you think MB gives us a better chance of winning than Cotts against NYY?
Molto
nothing wrong with this move. Buehrle will still get his starts either way. good thing is Buehrle could pitch awesome tomorrow and still lose and Cotts could lose in Detroit, giving us two losses. at least in this case, we have a very good chance at winning Friday. after all, the most important thing right now is to pick up wins. Bmr31
Don't you think MB gives us a better chance of winning than Cotts against NYY? Yes. And he gives us a better chance of winning in Detroit too. THats my point. It makes no difference.
Rex Hudler
Hit like we have been and it doesn't matter either way. I agree Bmr (did i just type that?), it doesn't matter. How many total wins you have at the end of the season is what matters. Yes, you like your chances better with MB on the mound, but they play the games for a reason. You never know what will happen. I say we enjoy the ride we are on right now and don't worry about the small s***.

Granted it's only 3 starts so far for Cotts, but his ERA is nearly 5. If you give up 5 runs against Mussina, you're probably not going to win. Whereas if you allow 5 to the Tigers, with their pitchers, a win is still very possible. I guess it doesn't matter who starts when as long as our bats continue mashing. bjmarte
I think starting Cotts is the right call regardless of what happens in the game tomorrow. The rest won't hurt Buhrle even if everything else is the same either way.

You know baseball well enough to know that an ERA doesn't mean s*** after a 13 IP or so, so why do it?

Hmmmm...his only good start so far was one in which he walked 5 in 5 IP I think it was. You do that in Yankee Stadium, you're going to be hitting the showers very quickly. All I'm saying is IMO our odds of winning @ NYY are 3 or 4 times greater with MB on the hill than Neal Cotts.
DonkeyKongerko
It's ok, give us Cotts against Mussina who is really tough anyways. Buehrle I guess could use the rest if he was having a sore arm. Should nearly guarantee us a win in Detroit although anything could happen.
Rex Hudler
All I'm saying is IMO our odds of winning @ NYY are 3 or 4 times greater with MB on the hill than Neal Cotts. That is obvious. No need for a reference to a stat that bears no real meaning. Hmmmm...his only good start so far was one in which he walked 5 in 5 IP I think it was. His last two starts were solid. If he matches either one, the Sox have a great shot of winning tomorrow.

YASNY
I like this move, simply because it's the best move for the team over the long haul. Giving Mark that extra day of rest may keeping him from burning out later. And yes, one day here and there can make a difference. If we lose tomorrow, we lose. But keeping Buehrle fresh and healthy is a must.
