Dick Allen
There's no need getting upset about who the Sox picked up or didn't pick up in this draft. Go back 5 years. No team has had much luck getting anyone using this venue.
witesoxfan
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:09 AM) So lemme see if I got this right . Nieto who was 23 in A+ ball has to make the Sox 25 man roster or else they send him back to the Nats ? Sems highly unlikely since Phegs and Flowers both hit AAA pitching pretty well and Nieto hasnt even sniffed that level yet. And it is highly unlikely. The Sox like his talent though, and if the Nats didn't believe highly enough in him to promote him to AA, it's certainly possible that the Sox will trade someone or send some cash to retain the rights to him. If not, they send him back and they're out $25K, which is the same as about 10-14 days worth of work for a guy making the major league minimum. There is no risk to this move whatsoever. SoxAce
He was a better hitter than Jesus Flores (who ironically enough, the Nats took with their rule 5 pick a few years ago when he was in high A) in the minors and Flores has/had carved out a decent backup career. Not saying that's going to happen with Nieto, but you never know. I mean if Albert Pujols can only have 81 ABs in high A (14 ABs in AAA) then jump to the bigs and become one of the league's best hitters of the past decade, then anyone can do it. thxfrthmmrs
QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 08:44 AM) 1) Omar Narvaez: Another graduate from the Rays Venezuelan baseball academy, Narvaez showed serious hitting skills in the VSL in his two years there. In 2009 he went .315/.390/.394 and in 2010 he was .308/.420/.371. It is very hard to predict how players coming from the VSL will perform when they come stateside. There are few pro scouting reports available on players and the league is comprised of teenagers. The one thing that stands out about Narvaez immediately though, is the fact that in his three minor league seasons he has never struck out more than he's walked. That is impressive at any level, and is certainly indicative of a good batting eye and an ability to make consistent contact. He has shown little power to this point, but his on base skills more than make up for that and he is still growing into his body. Narvaez also possesses good catch and throw skills, having thrown out basestealers at an above 50 percent clip for three straight seasons. Narvaez is a very intriguing player, and there is a lot to like from what he has shown so far in the organization. Sounds rather intriguing. sounds like Miguel Gonzalez 0.

flavum
Even if Nieto doesn't make the team, maybe they can work out a deal to keep him in the system. That happens once in a while. But hopefully the Sox will acquire a major league catcher soon (before February 15). Edited December 12, 2013 by flavum

Nieto would just be cut loose in this scenario. This all just smells like they want to be sure there's at least some sort of option if a real LH catcher isnt found But if they really like his potential.. then they can just implement it into their forget-2014 plan. At least...forgetting the need to ..streamline it. Hence why Konerko doesnt get in the way of anything depthwise, either Edited December 12, 2013 by Jose Paniagua

I think they are going to try and find cheap, long term options at catcher this year. If they appear close to competing next year, I think they'll try and find a big upgrade at that point. brian310
Really hope we can still acquire another long-term catcher to start and deal Flowers away for something. Then let the 2 Rule V kids and Phegley fight it out for the backup job.

2nd_city_saint787
really old scouting report on Nieito but he was highly thought of High School. http://nationals.scout.com/2/828174.html ETA: Even with his tough start to pro ball, Nieto believes that he can reach the majors in three or four years. He's going to be the type of player that starts off as a bit of a project until all of a sudden he starts putting up big numbers and likely starts skipping a level here and there. Look for Nieto to be pushing for a major league spot around 2013. Well if he sticks they sure got the bold part right.
