Honestly, I hope they use him as a reliever in AAA in hopes that he gains a couple MPH. The guy knows how to pitch, but when you are throwing 87-90 MPH fastballs without much movement, guys are going to hit you. His breaking pitches work ok and he changes speeds fairly well.

If anything, it's a quality signing for Charlotte. Having seen a year of him in the majors, he is not going to make it as a starting pitcher. He's likely just Philip Humber reincarnated, but maybe, if the Sox are lucky, he turns into something useful again.

Best AAAA pitcher in the world?

He is definitely a #1 in AAA. Would be nice to see a few of our affiliate teams make the playoffs with certain prospects on them. The Knights were bad last year. Hopefully with their best pitcher returning and some of the other acquisitions they made and certain prospects getting better, they can make a run at, at least... the wildcard.

Now with all that said.. let's pray he never sees the bigs with us again. (barring a s***load of pitching injuries or the sox in the toilet again for a top pick)

He is one of the few pitchers who seems to be WAY worse as a reliever.

That was way worse as a reliever when he prepared as a starting pitcher. If you put him in the mindset to work out of relief, then he can prepare his body to handle it.

Ultimately, I think he is destined for Japan or Korea.

For Dylan, that wouldn't be a bad thing. With his arm, learning a bit of the cunning and guile from the East would be good for his career.

Long time lurker, I'm going to try posting a bit more though.

I like this signing and I'm surprised no other teams snagged him up as a cheap 4 or 5 option. For us, he's great depth. If everything goes well this season and our staff can stay healthy, we won't see Axe in the majors. But I've never understood the hate on this board for a guy who makes the most out of what he has and gets results. The game he pitched against King Felix last year was a great example of the kinda stones this guy has. He may not have the greatest stuff but he isn't afraid to attack the strike zone and get guys out. I see so much stuff about how he's going to get destroyed every start and he goes out there and gets his outs. Sure he has had an occasional bad game, but who expected him to be Chris Sale? I certainly felt more confident watching him pitch than Gavin over the past couple seasons. He just has the right mentality. How can you not love the guy?

It's great to have guts but results are important too. The guy just doesn't have quality MLB stuff. Guts =/= talent

If Axe is on the major league roster and starting, something went terribly wrong. Look at his splits. He actually pitched better at home. On the road hitters hit .377/.425/1.002 against him. Good filler for Charlotte, but anyone who thinks there is something there is dreaming. It's luck if he gets through games relatively unscathed.

I think everyone realizes he's not major league material but as another poster pointed out, he's not the worst fill in, in the world if he's like the 8th option.

If he's the 8th option, he is pretty close to the worst fill in. I think this signing was more doing Dylan a solid, letting him keep pitching and maybe getting another team interested in his services so he can continue his career with someone else or spend the summer in Charlotte.
