I hope for the Dodgers sake that Kershaw's shoulder and elbow hold up because he has racked up some innings for such a young pitcher. And people are scared about Tanaka. LittleHurt05 Posted January 16, 2014 Share Posted January 16, 2014 While it does seem crazy to give a pitcher $30+ million a year for multiple years, I guess this is the best situation to do it. Kershaw is not a 30-year old free agent, the Dodgers are paying him for his age 26-32 seasons, those are his prime years. Obviously injuries happen to pitchers all the time, but if he stays relatively healthy, it's possible you don't see much decline from the last 3 seasons. He has averaged about 5.5 so far in his first 5 full seasons. So he will have to be the same pitcher for the next 7 years. It's possible, but it requires him to be healthy throughout. Assuming he stays healthy in 2014 and puts up a similar season as 2013, he will have put up a fWAR of 10.2 in the first two years of the contract. Assuming around $5 million in value per 1 WAR, he will have already provided the Sox with $51 million in value. His entire contract, even with the two option years will only pay him $57.5 million. It's not out of line at all to say that if he remains healthy for the duration of the contract, the Sox will have gotten him at about 1/3 cost to value. That will be the question mark. This is not quite true. Due to inflationary reasons, we can make a safe assumption that teams will pay more for WAR as the contract goes on.
