Cheap Moving Ideas

My daughter is moving from Chicago to Dallas in a week or so and I'm looking for ideas on saving money. She is living ina small studio apartment in Lakeview (sublease available), and about the only big furniture she has is a queen size bed and headboard. Renting a truck to move it doesn't really make sense. Full size vans are not available for one way rentals, only round trip. She is probably buying a car this weekend but won't be able to tow anything with it. I'm trying to avoid driving all the way back to Chicago (3,200 mile round trip).

Also she is planning on using space bags to compress her clothes and stuff to fit more in her car.

Other tips on cheap long distance moves?

Moving out of Lakeview is the biggest step in saving money.

If it can be replaced easily, don't bring it. It sucks to buy new stuff - whether actually new or used - but that's part of the problem faced with moving.

That's the plan right now. The truck would be $2,000. I told her we're better off buying different stuff in Dallas. Anyone want to buy a 6 month old queen size bed, mattress, and box spring?

Why don't you have her rent a Uhaul truck and drive it to Dallas, then have her buy a car there?

trying to save the $1,500 - $2,000. We're kind of using that money and putting it into a vehicle she's buying.

What kind of queen bed etc?

I'll post a pic. Iirc we bought the mattress and box spring at Macy's in June. The headboard and sides were bought on-line. I forget where. I'll have her send me a picture. I told her I would rather her not post a craigslist add and have strangers coming to her apartment.

Yeah, you can pm me as well. We are interested in adding a bed for our guest room in the basement.

You could craigslist the big items. I personally leave and sell the big items and just take my clothes and electronics.

The issue is a single 22 year old female inviting strangers into her apartment to see and buy the item.

Wow, I am shocked it costs that much...I thought when you said $2k you mean for a moving company to take her stuff...that is insane!

Yeah thats why my friend and I drove from Chicago to Houston. He bought a cheap van for the price of renting a uhaul. We did use a trailer hitch. Of course the van almost didnt make it and we almost got stranded in Lufkin Texas, when some random guy a gas station fixed the transmission problem. But we could only drive like 30 mph for a good part of the trip.

I know craigslist has a bad rep but seriously, not everyone is going to do inane things.

Seriously though, I'm sure she has a guy friend or two that would be willing to help her. I was just throwing out options.

Thanks. I'm not anti Craigslist by any stretch but she was very stressed by a couple guys that came to look at subletting her apartment and it turned her off from the process.
