The thing is, I'm not convinced that Duke was a troll. Maybe. I think it's just as possible that those are his actual opinions at this point in his life.

You can view nothing wrong with stealing and you may do it all the time, but it doesn't mean you're not a thief.

I'm with you. I think he was sincere but then became known as the guy with extreme opinions so he posted without a filter.

The 'Buster quickly died without his extreme opinions starting "real" discussions.

I agree. i don't think he was trolling (most of the time), but those were his actual opinions

Im curious why you guys are ok with it because he really believes in what he is saying? Multiple people on this site have reported his comments as offensive, racist, and sexist, and have gotten into long and terrible arguments with him. Now that he is gone, its ok because he really believed in what he was saying? That is an interesting position to take

It's the internet man. Is anything really offensive on the internet?

I'm curious what the final straw was because despite disagreeing with him on everything, I do believe in freedom of speech, no matter how ignorant he was.

I don't agree with racism nor sexism, but I support somebody's right to express their views if those are truly their views. Yes, in a way, pretending to be racist or sexist just to get responses is worse.

That isn't to say that he didn't cross the line into making personal attacks. That still deserves banning whether genuine or not.

Can't speak for the others, but I did not say whether I was ok with it. I just said I thought that, most of the time, he truly believed what he said.

EDIT: More to the point, I wasn't commenting on whether Duke ought to have banned, but whether he was a troll.

lol, to you, no.

Were you offended? Seriously? Don't get me wrong, he said some awful things, but go to youtube comments and other websites for truly repulsive stuff. I don't think Duke ever got to THAT point.

I too would like to know what was the final straw.

Just because there is other offensive things on the internet, doesnt mean this site should allow similar offensive things. I mean, should we allow people to start uploading porn on soxtalk because Pornhub exists? that is just silly.

There were many straws, many conversations, as there are about many things happening on this site.

What Duke posted was akin to having a "hot babe thread." It doesn't rise to the level of posting porn, but it's not 19th century dinner conversation material either. Sorry, I don't recall anything he said as being so offensive he shouldn't be allowed to post.

I dunno, going back years, I've always felt this board was too damned sensitive. As I said before, it's the freaking internet. Don't read it if you don't like it. Hit ignore. It's not like you're forced to read what he says as if he's standing in front of you screaming in your face. He started discussions, usually with extreme nonsense while the rest of us discussed the actual issues/topics in a more civilized, reasonable way. It'd be one thing if he were attacking people constantly, but as far as I can recall, he never did that.

Good advice for yourself apparently. A few minimum standards aren't hurting anybody. If that is a bother, there are other places who pride themselves on having no standards.

And just because we don't advertise everything that goes on behind the scenes, doesn't mean there aren't things happening.

Every discussion forum, blog or site that allows comments, has to make a decision where they want to draw the line. Many Sox sites, WSI for example, would never allow most of these discussion to even occur. On the other hand, big news sites like CNN or social media hubs like YouTube pretty much let it all fly.

Does anyone really want this place to look like a YT comment stream? No way. So we draw a line.

And for the record, you really have to mess up in a big way, repeatedly, to get banned from SoxTalk.

I personally think Duke believed most of what he said, though I do think he'd exaggerate or pick talking points he knew would enflame to make his points.

One more thing - the "freedom of speech" argument does not apply. This is a privately owned website, and SoxTalk can choose to enforce rules in any way it wants to. This is not the public square.

Not specific to any one person who has been banned but think about your mod team. We represent the totality of the social and political spectrum. When it reaches the point where 100% of the mods are fed up, we start talking about it. Weeks or months later something finally happens. There are no rash judgements. Anyone who has crossed paths with the person removes themselves from the discussions. By the time someone is suspended or banned they have had more appeals than a death row inmate. And then, we allow some back.

I believe there can be minimum standards here and elsewhere on the internet. There should be a variety of places to express your opinions, each with standards that they feel are best for their site. This is a baseball site that also discusses anything that pops into our heads. Not allowing politcial stuff to overwhelm the core business makes sense for soxtalk.

While freedom of speech exists, there is no freedom for anyone to have to listen to you.
