Sad to see he won't break record with bears. But it was too difficult to use a roster spot on someone who had no value outside return specialist.

Especially with the rule changes away from the returner.

Age played a factor for sure, but I think the changes in special teams personnel played a major factor in Hester's decline. He had some damn good blockers in front of him when he was scoring so much.

Personally I think it was injuries. The first time he tweaked an ankle it seemed like that was it for him as a big return factor.

Got bored yesterday and wrote this fun little mock offseason up...

STARTING CAP MONEY- 8.4M (per Brad Biggs)

RELEASE (w/ Cap savings)

Peppers (9.8M)

Bush (1.8M)

Bennett (2.4)

Podlesh (1M)

(Kept Weems just because he's a good ST player and only clears a mill)

CAP MONEY AFTER CUTS- 23.4

EXTEND

Marshall 3 years 7M/12M/15M (saves 2M)

CAP MONEY AFTER EXTENSION- 25.4

SIGN (all numbers are cap hits)

Michael Bennett- 4 years 8m/10m/12m/14m (DE Seahawks)

Corey Wootton 1 year 1.5M

Nate Collins 1 year 500k

Jay Ratliff 2 years 2M/2.5M

DJ Williams 1 year 1M

Blake Costanzo 1 year 1M

Zack Bowman 2 years 1.5M/1.5M

Husain Abdulah 3 years 2M/3M/4M (SS Chiefs)

Matt Shaughnessy 2 years 2M/2.5M (DE Cards ((was used as a DE)) )

Josh McCown 2 years 2.5M/2.5M

Eben Britton 2 years 1M/1.5M

Joe Morgan 3 years 1M/1.5M/2M (WR Saints)

Total Cap Spending- 24M

TOTAL CAP SPACE LEFT- 1.4m

CAP NEEDED FOR DRAFT- 2, 019,139 (per Overthecap.com)

RESTRUCTURE

Cutler (convert 2M into cap money)

MONEY AFTER RESTRUCTURE 3.4m

DRAFT

1R Aaron Donald DT Pitt ( "a dream for teams that utillize a 3T DT" )

2R Keith McGill CB Utah (has been gaining steam since the combine, looks like a 2R pick)

3R Terrence Brooks FS Florida State (Competes and probably beats Conte for FS position)

4R Tyler Gaffney RB Stanford (Takes over the Bush role)

5R Deandre Coleman DT/DE Cal (Can be utilized as a Red Bryant type DE or inside at DT)

6R Jordan Navjar TE Baylor (Underutilized in Baylors O, transfer from TE U, soft hands, good blocker)

6R Best OL Available

DL Bennett-Donald-Paea/Ratliff/Coleman-Wootton/Shaughnessy/Coleman/Bass/Washington- Bennett and Donald are locks, the other 2 spots have good competition.

LB Briggs and then Williams, Bostic, and SMC battle for 2 spots

CB Jennings-McGill-Frey-Bowman-Hayden. Bowman showed he was capable incase McGill slips. Hayden competes with Frey for the nickle

FS Brooks/Conte. Phil said Conte would compete for the job so I didn't spend money or a top 2 pick on the position. Brooks probably wins the job, Conte stays for depth

SS Abdullah/Derrick Martin

Thoughts?

I think the only way Michael signs with the Bears is if Martellus is there. Also, I think McCown is going to ask for $4-5+ mill a year, not as a total for a multi-year deal.

Good thing Martellus is indeed a Bear.....McCown at 4-5M wouldn't surprise me either, IF he goes somewhere to be a starter. I can't see the Bears spending 4-5M on a backup.

He was talking about releasing Earl, not Martellus.

I'm an idiot. I was trying to think of the other Bennett, and came to the conclusion that the only Bennett on the Bears roster was Martellus. It also didn't make sense because, jesus, why would you get rid of him after the season he just had.

The artist formally known as Jay Ratlff has been re-signed to a 2 year deal....No word on what the numbers look like yet.

Glad to see him back. Can potentially start at either DT spots or add quality depth.

Curious about the money involved, but I'm sure it's reasonable. Happy with this move. We badly need DT depth, and Ratliff is a solid vet.

Colts gave former Browns LB D'Qwell Jackson a four-year, $22 million deal including $11 million guaranteed.

Colts are big on overspending for bad and old linebackers.

It's amazing that they have made the playoffs 2 straight years. I can't put that on anyone but Luck and Pagano. They have made some truly brutal personnel moves.

They play in the most incompetent division in football. Luck by himself is almost enough to win that division every year.

Why has money been so slow to leak for Bears players

That's a good question. Trying to keep other teams from knowing how much cap space we have? That seems like a bit of a stretch because I'm sure they could find out (e.g. ask the agent) if they really wanted to. I'm not entirely sure.

Are they just waiting until the player officially signs? Maybe we've only had verbal agreements when the deals have been announced, so they don't want the #'s to get out until the contract has been signed.

Yeah, it may just be that Ratliff is less big news than DaQwell jackson so we won't know full terms until then. Or that our contracts are just much more creative.

Chicago media is more afraid of offending someone and missing a scoop than reporting this stuff. Is the same reason why the most solid trade rumors and reports first come from out of town, and not in it.
