Would seem like Hoke would be moving on (presumably to Tampa) if Ed Donatel (secondary coach in San Fran) is coming as well.

Paul Pasqualoni is an excellent DL coach. Maybe he will stay on. If Hoke stays, it is feasible that Donatell would coach another position under Fangio. Donatell has been a DC before.

Yep. He was a DB coach at my college too (Cal State Fullerton) back in 89. That alone makes me like Donatell. Was a pretty good DC I thought (for Packers / Falcons). Or at least was good at generating a pass rush and turnovers (not sure what the PPG were).

Pasq is as good coach as is Hoke and Groh. No rumors yet on them (and as I've said, they are the three I'd be ok with staying). Presume you could make Donatell like an assistant DC or something with another position as his focus (to your point). I know Hoke is pretty widely regarded in the league though so would presume their is a shot he heads elsewhere. I figure he'll be a DC one day.

Presume with Fangio coming on board, it means we will not be spending money on Paea. Can't imagine he's a fit in a 3-4.

This team might not look great next year (or the year after for that matter) but I'm insanely excited about where the organization is headed after the last 3 hires.

I am fine with that. He had a career year in a contract year. He had never been healthy any other year before that that I recall. And you drafted two DT the year previously (albeit it was Emery, good lord).

Its going to be at least interesting with consistent improvement instead of constant embarrassment. It will be fun for sure to see how this team evolves.

Exactly. It's going to be fun to watch how this roster evolves under this new administration. Might have a season next year like the Vikings had this year. See some flashes of "hmmmm this could get could" mixed with "I think I'd rather watch RedZone today."

The key is, we should be able to see "progress"...vs a consistent oh god, it keeps getting worse.

Good read on Fangio from MMQB and a quote from Harbaugh (this is a yr old).

“I think he’s one of the all-time best defensive coordinators in the history of the league. I think that’s who he is. I think that’s what his legacy will be someday.’’ —Jim Harbaugh

Paea to me was gone anyway with Sutton and Ferguson getting more time next year.

The thing is Harbaugh is a freaking nut job and I have no idea if I can take what he is saying about him that seriously. He often says things just to get a rise out of people or over state something emphatically to get the point across just for s***s and giggles.

If the new staff believes in what Paea did then he could be a fit anywhere on the line.

3-4 DEs are basically a 3 technique DT in a 4-3, and with the pressure he got last year some team will over pay to play him there.

Buttt I wouldn't bank on Paea repeating what he did, and that comes from a big Paea fan.

In a perfect world the kid from USC falls into our lap somehow setting up Houston-Rat/Ego-Williams.

They mentioned today that Ratliff likely will not return, had too many injuries, as well as an end of the season practice incident in which he was removed from practice

That depends on whether it'll be a 1-gap or 2-gap 30 front. If it's a 2-gap, then yeah, we'll need a monster in the middle and Paea wouldn't fit. If it's a 1-gap (like the Texans ran under Wade Phillips), then Paea would be big enough. All of their DTs at that time were around 300 lbs.

I think a 1-gap 3-4 could be a real possibility, at least in year 1, to help aid the transition. Plus, it makes it easy to switch back and forth from a 30-front to a 40-front nickel/dime package because the personnel is very similar for both.

Durkin and Mannelly discussed how Fangio runs a hybrid, so 3-4 and 4-3 could be on the field at any time. Obviously personnel is important for what he does, but it doesnt seem like he is married to a concept

I predict Bears will sign Gholson to be our safety in time. He is on the outs in Tampa and will likely be a cap casualty.

He was an absolute bust as a free agent signing for the Bucs.
