bmags
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 15, 2014 -> 03:23 PM) And that was a huge reason he was put on the team. Some incredible moves in that shootout. That Kovalchuk soft wrister...oh my. That was crazy.
bmags
Did they run xrays on Kessel's hand or did they just tape it right away?

zenryan
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 15, 2014 -> 10:23 AM) And that was a huge reason he was put on the team. Some incredible moves in that shootout. That Kovalchuk soft wrister...oh my. To pull that move with that pressure was amazing. Reminded me of the Zidane PK goal vs Italy in the Wold Cup Final in 2006.
IlliniKrush
It was Datsyukian...I was waiting for something crazy from him. The goal immediately reminded me of this.
IlliniKrush
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) It's literally the only reason he made the team. He's a shootout specialist. It's not the only reason, but it made it an easier pick coming down to the final few spots. He's a really solid player otherwise.
RockRaines
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 15, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) It's not the only reason, but it made it an easier pick coming down to the final few spots. He's a really solid player otherwise. It was him or Bobby Ryan from what I understand. My insufferable blue jackets fans friends are saying Bob makes them Stanley Cup favorites. And people think fair weather hawks fans are horrible.
cabiness42
So this sets up nice if Canada can beat Finland in regulation tomorrow. Canada gets #1 seed, Russia gets #4, and both would end up on the opposite side of #3 US in the bracket.
southsider2k5
What a great game. Kane almost won it twice there at the end, but wow at the shootout.
IlliniKrush
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 15, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) What a great game. Kane almost won it twice there at the end, but wow at the shootout. It was good drama, but I would have loved to see them play it out longer, or just tie, because I realize in pool play you aren't going to play unlimited overtime. I just don't want a medal decided by a shootout. I know it's happened before, but it's so lame.
HuskyCaucasian
Interesting... per the NBC commentators during the SUI vs CZE game... after the USA hockey team beat Russia, the score was oddly absent from the outdoor scoreboard on the area. (there are LED lights on the roof/side that can show the score of the game) Edited February 15, 2014 by Athomeboy_2000
LittleHurt05
Good thing Russia won that shootout. Had they lost, it was very likely they were facing the US in the quarterfinals.
zenryan
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 16, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) Good thing Russia won that shootout. Had they lost, it was very likely they were facing the US in the quarterfinals. had they lost, that team probably would've made a quick exit from the tournament. Seems like a team not handling all the pressure well. Maybe this win will get them going now.

If Canada/Finland ends in regulation, US gets Switzerland. If it goes to overtime, US faces winner of Czech Republic vs Slovakia.
IlliniKrush
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 16, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) True, but I'd still prefer to avoid playing them that early. If Canada/Finland ends in regulation, US gets Switzerland. If it goes to overtime, US faces winner of Czech Republic vs Slovakia. And if Canada loses in any fashion, they'll get Russia in the quarterfinals. Crazy, as a lot of people had that pegged as the gold medal matchup. cabiness42
US will avoid Russia before the finals no matter what. Russia can only be seeded 4th or 5th and US can only be seeded 2nd or 3rd. If Canada wins in regulation or loses, US also avoids them before the finals. Only "bad" result from the CAN-FIN game is an overtime/shootout win by Canada. That creates a US-CAN semifinal. zenryan
Unless my math is wrong, the top part of the bracket is going to be brutal if the Finland-Canada game ends in regulation. Canada,Finland and Russia will all be in that part of the bracket. I'd rather take my chances on against Sweden right now in a 2/3 matchup. I just don't want a medal decided by a shootout. I know it's happened before, but it's so lame. I agree fully. I know they picked up lots of the NHL rules for this, but that was one I was pretty disappointed to see. Let 'em play. The Russia game today was a perfect example. There was no way they were losing in a shootout today, but OT, maybe a bit of luck happens and they go home.
LittleHurt05
Drew Doughty saves the day for Canada. US is the 2 seed, face the winner of the Czechoslovakian civil war, with Canada potentially lurking in the semifinals.
Buehrle>Wood
Wow talk about the US screwing themselves by playing well. Play the winner of the two strongest second tier teams then Canada in the semis.
IlliniKrush
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 16, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) Wow talk about the US screwing themselves by playing well. Play the winner of the two strongest second tier teams then Canada in the semis. It will be a tough road, though that Canada Switzerland matchup isn't a forgone conclusion with the way Hiller is playing. I am disappointed we can't get a USA Canada matchup for gold, but a semi matchup would still be epic. Raask played well but both goals were soft. Wish the timing of the second would have been earlier.
LittleHurt05
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 16, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) Wow talk about the US screwing themselves by playing well. Play the winner of the two strongest second tier teams then Canada in the semis. Canada doesn't have it much easier. Like Krush said, Switzerland is no push over with Hiller in net, then the US is looming. Sweden took advantage of an easier group and combined with Slovakia's no show vs Slovenia, they are looking good into the semis.
cabiness42
Hockey playoff bracket: 8 Slovenia vs 9 Austria, Winner vs 1 Sweden 5 Russia vs 12 Norway, Winner vs 4 Finland 6 Switzerland vs 11 Latvia, Winner vs 3 Canada 7 Czech Rep vs 10 Slovakia, Winner vs 2 USA Times not set yet, hopefully the US gets one of the two late games (noon ET)
Rowand44
So I assume the U.S. didn't get the 1 seed because they went into OT for one of their games? EDIT: For some reason I was under the impression that all wins counted the same, didn't realize they got 1 less pt for winning in the shoot out.
