Bmr31
There is more to this than just one game. Did the sox ruin Cotts confidence? Me and others were afraid this guy wasnt ready. Now what? The next Rauch. While i wasnt against the decision of him starting today, it backfired and JM has to be responsible. KW has to be responsible for bringing him up too soon. Im f***ing pissed. DonkeyKongerko
It was a HUGE gamble on the part of JM. The reward of Cotts having a good start apparently outweighed the odds of him getting shelled in JM's mind. Here's my only problem. I really don't like how JM said there is a "99% chance Buehrle will start" or something along those lines. If you aren't sure who is gonna start, don't say that. Now JM looks like a f***ing idiot. The Critic
Yep, save Buerhle for the Tigers, Jerry!!! UGH Now we have to hope that Dan Wright and the smoking Sox bats can overcome JM's stupid decision!

Queen Prawn
I am not sure Cotts had any confidence to ruin. That is not a slap at him, just haven't seen enough of him to know if this is a possibility.

bjmarte
Who was the one running around here after his first start telling us that we should have expected all the balls that Cotts threw? I don't think anyone is suprised that this happened. I'm not sure that Cotts was good enough for there to be anything to ruin yet.

One game? With a rookie starter? I think you are overestimating the affect this will have.
Queen Prawn
Of course he did, he had success in the minors. It's one thing to have confidence in the minors and another to have confidence in the majors - see Garland as an example. He owned the minors and now, 3 years later he is showing he is becoming confident in the big show.
IlliniBob72
If one loss, after beating the New York Yankees by a combined score of 24-4, dents their confidence, the Sox have major self-esteem issues.

The Critic
Im WAY more worried about the long term affects of this poor decision......on the sox and cotts. I'm not - if Cotts has any balls at all, he won't be ruined by one start. If he is ruined by one bad start, that's too bad for him and the Sox. Honestly, this start didn't look that different from his other starts, except that this time he couldn't get out of the trouble he creates for himself with walks. Today I'm more upset by a chickens*** manager who's happy to win a series and not eager enough to go for a sweep and make a statement. "Contingency Plan", my ass. That's just another way of saying "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad". Like HSC said, if MB ain't sore, hurt or overtaxed, sitting him down was stupid. After the cream in the face (i.e.. the "big boys" making him feel like he belonged) I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the tunnel crying. Hell.. I feel so bad for him right now I feel like crying

I agree that every game is a stat but I stand with Molto when he said decisions JM made for starting pitcher in this case gave us the best chance to come out with at least one win out of these two games. Switch the starters around and we could have easily come away with the loss in both.

And again I go back to my statement that the loss in the first game at detroit would be more damaging.
IlliniBob72
It's not like they're losing 18-4 (yet). One loss isn't going to do anything. A loss in New York would have less of an effect than a loss in Detroit.
