Harry Chappas
Before the Neil Cotts debacle they were both, mostly hawk talking about how the clubhouse was completely against Buerhle getting pushed back. From two guys that are around this team their comments against JM were numbing. They spoke of how this came could have pushed the Sox to a new level and how Buerhle was f***ed. They went on to talk of the undue pressure on buerhle tomorrow and how badly this team wanted the sweep. KW looked like he was going to kill someone. I have never heard them talk like this before. Wanna see Buerhle comment on St. Louis now. Four days after coming of the DL Matt Morris is pitching on three days rest as St. Louis understands every game is important. JM believs that at the end of the season it is what it is and he plays no role in anything. What a f***ing asshole. I was indifferent on the situation until I heard Hawk and DJ break it down. What the f***. Did JM not see Cotts struggle to throw strikes. Many on this board sure did. well unlike Colon at least Cotts gave it everything he had. He won 1 World Series with an Oakland team that was head and shoulders above everyone else talent wise for at least 4 years. He's married to Dave Duncan, who was the real reason Hawk fired Tony. Hawk wanted to can Duncan, but LaRussa said if you fire him , he'd leave, so he just canned them both. If you think Manuel tinkers, he's a pure amateur next to Tony. Harry Chappas
Poeple in St. Louis like larussa a little bit more than we like Manuel. Wheather you want to beleive this or not is up to you. He is by far the most academically learned person in baseball, or close to it. This allows him top talk a great game and make you feel he is right. He tinkers to no end. He is a good manger but not as great as his numbers. My point was only that Hawk is with the team and spoke of their feelings something he rarely does. It had nothing to do with his ability as a G.M. I've got nothing against your post. Its my point exactly. If people around here are frustrated with JM's tinkering, they would be suicidal with LaRussa's. My point is if the Sox never got rid of him, they would not be any better off than they are today. Just because he won a bunch of games with great teams doesn' make his firing from the White Sox a mistake.I wonder what Jimmy Piersall thinks. jdm2662
Tony LaRusa is not the most loved person in ST. Louis. i have many friends there, and they all tell me the same thing. As for Hawk ripping on JM, I didn't see it. Hawk usually has comments to say that are negative, but he has confirmed that in interviews he is told not do so on the air. I guess yesterday, he made an exception. It's just his opinion. You can agree with him or not. Unless Mark was hurting yesterday, i think he should've started myself. Too late now. Hawk may question some of JM's moves. I question some of JM's moves. I question some of my own moves. None of that is earthshaking. I have never seen one person agree 100% on another person's life. LaRussa is vilified on the card's MLB boards a lot, as LaLoser. And by the time Hawk fired him from the Sox, LaRussa was being challenged a lot in Chicago. The first time Hawk spoke of firing LaRussa, I was one of a firestorm of folks who called the Sox front office and daid fire Hawk, not LaRussa. A few months later when Hawk did the deed, it was pretty apparent that a change needed to be made for everyone's sake. In a lot of ways I wish LaRussa was still managing us but then again the constant LaRussa sucks threads herer would piss me of too. The only constant in baseball fandom is that every fan thinks they know more than every manager and if only given a chance, they could manage a team to 27 straight world series titles, which is why Veeck ahd such fun with his "fans vote on what play to call" promotion. Connie mack had some dismal seasons and some world championships. Stengal was a loser before he got to NY, won what, 10 world series in 12 years, an incredible feat, and then two years later lost 120. Which makes my point that the manager did not lsoe yesertday's games, the players did. The game would have gone to extra innings had we not given up the last two runs. Or we could have scored more and other players could have hiot like Everett did. The players lost yesterday's game, as they win or lose every game, as a team effort. cwsox
and what is it that the manager is putting them in best psoition to win - a game, one game, or something more? A manager can do anything to put the team in psioition to win one game - overwork a pitcher, whatever. However, the season is 162 games long and perhaps a post season. I much prefer a manager who is putting the team in the best position to win long term than just one game. And that requires a different strategy and different usage of players. It's all about the long term, not just "today's game". For the record, I live in what can definitely be called "Cardinal country". So, I am very aware that there are, in fact, some not so bright Cardinal fans that think LaRussa is a lousy manager. I've been watching this guy manage for years and I'm telling you, he's a solid major league manager.
Jim Fainter
Will someone tell me the story about Jimmy Piersall/LaRussa. Tks. One of Hawks' s problems is that he thinks everyone on the staff of a team should be an ex big league ballplayer. That's why he wanted to clean house everywhere. I still like him, though, and welcome his criticism. Without Hawk, I would never have known that the players were against MB being pushed back in NY. That's why he fired Dave Dombrowski. Piersall constantly criticized LaRussa and his coaching staff. At one point LaRussa had enough, and actually went to a television studio where Piersall was at with 2 or 3 coaches, I believe one of them was Jim Leyland, and got in Piersall's face. I think they even threaten to get physical with him. Of course, that didn't stop Piersall, and he was eventually shown the door after another comment he made about player's wives.
