caulfield12
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 21, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) Jerry Crasnick @jcrasnick 2h Another name to put on list of future #dbacks manager candidates: Joe McEwing. Goes back a long way with La Russa. La Russa, who joins former St. Louis colleagues Dave Duncan and Dave McKay in Arizona, apparently has no plans to disassemble the Gateway Arch piece by piece and transport it by U-Haul to Phoenix. Then again, it’s only his fourth day on the job.Right now the buzz is swirling around LaRocque (current Cardinals' Director of Scouting) and (Mike) Aldrete. Next week it might be Walt Jocketty, Jose Oquendo (Cards), Mike Gallego (A's) or Jim Riggleman. What the Diamondbacks lack in talent, they’ll more than make up for in rumors and innuendo this summer. from Crasnick piece at espn.com http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...p-d-backs-brass This is the big question. A lot of people asked why La Russa would leave a cushy job with the commissioner’s office and jump back into the fray with a team. The answer was readily apparent to anyone who entered his office at 3:30 p.m. and saw him immersed in his lineup card and the injury reports on game days. La Russa missed the competition and the heat of the battle in a way that fielding media inquiries about replay and the “transfer rule” simply couldn’t fill. But the demands of this new CBO role will test his judgment and his patience. La Russa needs to view the proceedings from 35,000 feet, delegate authority to the people below him and develop a vision. That’s not necessarily going to be easy for a guy whose mood varied solely according to what happened between 7 and 10 p.m. for 33 years. In the final analysis, La Russa isn’t going to make his mark as CBO by hiring the most St. Louis Cardinals' employees or proving that gut instincts and scouting judgments trump statistical analysis. The final chapter of his illustrious baseball career will be judged on whether he can bring a winner to Arizona. I imagine Tony La Russa, of all people, wouldn’t want it any other way. I think this move is to stop his arb clock.

I think this move is to stop his arb clock. It's because the Angels know he doesn't do well in the pen and that he's already had his development borderline ruined by being a relief pitcher instead of starting

lasttriptotulsa
QUOTE (flavum @ May 22, 2014 -> 05:55 PM) Barring a bad 9th inning by the Jays pen, Buehrle 8-1, 2.16 Won at Fenway. Unbelievable. While I'm sure at some point he will come back down to Earth and end up with a typical Buehrle season, it would be awesome to see him 20 wins and a sub 3.00 ERA at the end of the season. He's come close but never accomplished either feat.
CaliSoxFanViaSWside
The Rangers were blowing out Detroit so Detroit puts in backup infielder Danny Worth to pitch . caulfield12
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ May 22, 2014 -> 11:13 PM) The Rangers were blowing out Detroit so Detroit puts in backup infielder Danny Worth to pitch . This was the first time he has pitched on any level. He proceeded to K all 3 TX. hitters he faced with knuckleballs. He might have a better future as a pitcher (Steve Sparks/Wakefield) than an infielder. He messed up two routine plays (one because of the sun) in just a couple of innings the other day, and has never been much of a hitter. http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/76156...0023#!PMFOM Argues that MLB needs to look more closely at the Japanese PBL for a model/template for preventing TJ injuries...including the introduction of the six-man rotation, with one more roster spot added as a sweetener for the MLBPA because of the diminished stats/salaries for starters used to getting paid for 30+ starts per year. Maybe they could actually pitch deeper into games, and it would come close to balancing out.... 5 man rotation=32.4 starts per season 6 man rotation=27 starts per season Let's say a starter was averaging 6 innings per start with the old way. He'd have to pitch 7 or 7 1/3 IP per start over 27 to balance out his total innings for the course of an entire season.
flavum
Whoever mentioned last night that the MLB Network was questioning whether Buehrle had a stretch of dominance like this, yes he has. Just not to begin a season. 2001- Starts 8-17: team 8-2, 6-1, 1.94 ERA 2002- Starts 7-16: team 6-4, 6-3, 2.33 ERA 2005- Starts 7-16: team 8-2, 6-0, 1.51 ERA 2007- Starts 12-21: team 6-4, 6-3, 2.18 ERA 2011- Starts 17-26: team 7-3, 5-1, 2.15 ERA He also had a 21 game stretch with 19 quality starts and a 2.54 ERA And with all of these stretches, he pitched a minimum of 71 innings. This year, Buehrle has thrown 66.2 innings.
lasttriptotulsa
Looking at Buehrle's stats for the past 365 days really shows that he's been on a good run for awhile. Over the past year his stat line goes as follows 33GS, 19-8, 3.01 ERA, 209.1 IP, 6 K/9, 2.73 K/BB. Thats a pretty lengthy stretch of dominance for a guy who most have never considered an ace. It's kind of funny looking at Griffey's game log from 2008 on Baseball Reference. It has a line before April 28th that says "Player went from Cincinnati Reds to Chicago White Sox" and then a line after April 28th that says "Player went from Chicago White Sox to Cincinnati Reds". Makes it look like he was traded three times that year.
