2014 NFL Draft Thread

It is funny reading grades and people analyzing 5-7th round picks. Sure, a small percentage make an impact but a vast majority will be cut or replaced by another 6th round pick within a year or two.

Tom Brady going in the 6th round was the worst thing to happen to the draft. Gives people hope of finding that late round gem.

This draft is stacked though, I can certainly see a lot of these 5-7 round guys sticking.

then there wont be many roster spots available next season in the NFL. Yet talking heads and fans will be hyping up 5-7th rounders next season.

The punter the Bears drafted bench pressed more reps than Clowney.

nfl.com scouting review

Did 23 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press at the NFL Scouting Combine -- more than six tight ends, 19 running backs, 21 defensive linemen and all 37 wide receivers.

Thought it was funny that one scouting report knocked him for average athleticism after I saw those combine numbers. That's about as good as it gets for a punter.

Not a high bar to clear to improve our punting game. I'm not going to pretend to know whether he'll be any good.

Me either. I just know we needed a punter. I like the fact that this whole draft has been addressing areas of need. Loved the Vereen move.

As the resident Miami fan, what are your thoughts on O'Donnell?

he averaged 47 yards per punt last year so that really speaks for itself.

he's a punter so you really never know but if you use a draft pick on him then he better make the team or it looks bad.

I found this interesting. Looks like he played LB and TE at some point in college (or it's a typo, and they meant "high school"). Makes sense considering his size/speed/strength. I like his attitude about covering punts.

He'll compete for Bears punting duties with Drew Butler, the son of former Bears PK Kevin Butler, and Tress Way, neither of whom have punted in an NFL game. A former soccer player who played linebacker and tight end in college, O'Donnell hardly resembles a punter. One of just two to participate in agility tests at the Combine, he recorded a 4.64 40-second dash and 23 reps on the 225-pound bench press, more than 62 other offensive skill-position players. He tallied three tackles and a forced fumble last season at Miami.

"It’s exactly why I’m there – being another defensive player down the field to make a tackle – so if need be, I’ll jump in there and make a tackle," O'Donnell said about continuing his aggressive temperament on punt coverage duties in the NFL.

"I don’t think being a specialist should make you any different than any other guys on the team," he continued. "It (my athleticism) helps me get some respect, be one of the guys, work out with them, just another special-teams guy."

I can't wait to see what comes out about Antonio Richardson. He was one of the best tackles in college football his Sophomore year, and completely dominated Clowney in their matchup. Last year he played at about 60% after injuring his knee, and he had a worse year, but still played well overall. His knee must be completely ruined. Otherwise, I can't fathom why no one has taken him. And I'm a little upset that we just drafted an OT, but not Tiny. It's the 7th round. He's a guy you take a chance on.

Craig Smoak ‏@CraigSmoak 1h

Former Maud HS and TCU OL James Dunbar has agreed to a UDFA deal w/ the Bears, per @SSGFootball. #EastTexas

Bucky's 5th Quarter ‏@B5Q 20m

Another UDFA signing: Ryan Groy to the Chicago Bears.

Joe Felice ‏@FeliceJ55 57m

@nfltrade_rumors you can add Dayton FS Kyle Sebetic and East Carolina DE Lee Pegues to Bears UDFA's

Jackson Coleman ‏@WJackson5 1h

Bears get another UDFA in Louisville DT Brandon Dunn.

Per @RapSheet, Michael Sam would've had an UDFA offer from the #Bears. #Giants & #Ravens also.

Real talk here. Can Sam actually play football? I don't give a s*** that he's gay. Good for him. Can he play? Or is this another spectacle?

Obvious Mizzou bias here, but yes. He's undersized but has some real damn broad shoulders and a Joakim Noah motor. He was a projected 2nd/3rd rounder when the season ended, plummeted when he came out. I mean, unanimous All-American and SEC Defensive Player of the Year mean nothing to the NFL...but he played really f***ing good last year.

I forgot Kroenke owns the Rams. He lives in Columbia and has Mizzou ties, so it makes sense that they'd take the chance.

He is limited, but he can be explosive. Kind of a tweener, but I suspect Fisher will find creative ways to use him

They have quite the D-Line in St. Louis, I don't know if it's a lock he makes the team.

probably going to be seldom used or placed on the practice squad.

Sam was never going to be a 2nd round pick, him being a 3rd rounder was probably a major reach too.
