They're already bringing Adolfo to the states? I figured he'd spend a summer in the Dominican league and come over next year.

He already spent some time hanging out with Bristol getting the routine down, traveling with the team, and taking BP for several weeks last year. IIRC he's a year older than some of the youngest guys signed out of there, so it seemed like it made sense to me.

He's 17. Players at Bristrol, Great Falls, and the newest AZL team are going to be 18 or 19 at the youngest.

He'll turn 18 during the season. And the only reason I said he'd be in AZL is because Buddy Bell said he would be.

Oh no, I never doubted it, it just seems early. Hopefully he hits like crazy.

Sorry, shouldn't say never doubted it, just that I never doubted you guys.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been slowly updating my big board. Not going to paste the monstrosity in here again just yet (might save that for an FS article closer to the end of ST), but a few things stood out in terms of what units on what teams to watch...

--I really like the probable Kannapolis rotation as something interesting to watch. Lots of talented arms all with broad spectrums of variable assessment: Danish, Mitchell, Brennan, Goldberg, Freudenberg

--Birmingham rotation seems solid the first 4, and all are guys who could be in Chicago within a year, so that is worth watching: Beck, Bassitt, Snodgress, Jaye. No idea on the 5th though, could be any of Cose (who is wildly inconsistent), Recchia (one of my deep sleepers), McCully (who I am guessing they put back in the pen where he's had success) or Blough.

--Winston-Salem's Lineup looks like a fun watch, particularly the likely outfield: Hawkins, May and Coats. Barnum and Anderson should be in that lineup too.

--B-Ham outfield will be the three toolsy guys - Thompson, Mitchell, Walker. Hopefully one of them pops, they are all very athletic and that should be a fun outfield to watch defensively.

--Charlotte's skill infield should be a focus. Depending on how things shake out, between the 3 infield slots, you are looking at some combo of Semien, Sanchez, L Garcia and Davidson. They may have to rotate around.

--None of the bullpens jump out at me. They all seem to have a couple interesting guys, then not much behind it.

--My sleeper unit is Kanny's infield: some combo of Rondon, Stringer and Shryock, maybe with Voight. Voight isn't a prospect but he's a good bat, and I think all the other three have some intriguing potential.

I wonder what the chances are of Leury playing CF everyday.

In the low minors, Adam Lopez is absolutely the most intriguing arm for me to watch this year.

You may have to wait a while then, as he's coming off knee surgery and will miss some time at the beginning of the season. I like him too, but missing some time like that isn't ideal for a guy already slightly behind the age curve and at the edge of the radar.

For low minors arms, I'm looking hard at everyone in that Kanny rotation, as well as Olacio, Ortiz and Hansen in W-S's rotation, Recchia (who may be in AA), and some relievers: Montas (who may start), Ball, Throne and Wheeler.

Is Montas in the bullpen now?

Is Montas in the bullpen now?

Well, I couldn't figure out with Montas, Ortiz and Recchia there, which two would start and which one may relieve. Could be any of the three going to the pen, or maybe one goes up or down a level from there, I couldn't decide.

Looks like our real SP prospects are Birmingham and below.

A few interesting guys in Birmingham.

I also note that while Montas has gotten the pub out of that Peavy trade, Wendelken seems to be ahead of him, per the list above.

"Ahead" only in terms of polish, and therefore level in the org. Montas is a higher value prospect, IMO. He is just younger, more raw and more in need of development. Montas' fastball is something special.

Any word on how Hawkins has performed this spring?

I've only seen one scouting-type person give a report, from the back fields, I think it may have been Jason Parks. Calling him a Role 4 guy, has serious doubts about the hit tool every being good enough. But also acknowledged the big raw power. Seperately, I saw a different person talk about how surprisingly good Hawkins was in CF defensively - so that's a positive.

Birmingham's roster looks pretty well set online, though they haven't announced it yet. Here it is (asterisks are the guys I assume will start):

Pitchers

20 Chris Bassitt*

44 Chris Beck*

41 Frank De Los Santos

48 Terry Doyle*

10 Parker Frazier

34 Nelvin Fuentes

14 Myles Jaye*

31 Nick McCully

30 Nestor Molina

40 Scott Snodgress*

9 Kevin Vance

35 Cody Winiarski

Catchers

Miguel Gonzalez

21 Kevan Smith*

Infielders

4 Chris Curley*

17 Jeremy Farrell

2 Micah Johnson*

24 Christian Marrero

3 Jaime Pedroza*

25 Rangel Ravelo*

5 Daniel Wagner

Outfielders

8 Michael Earley* (DH?)

27 Josh Richmond*

32 Trayce Thompson*

23 Keenyn Walker*

No Saladino, so I assume he's in Charlotte. Not sure if Early, Richmond or Marrero will be the regular DH. Also not sure if Wagner or Curley start at 3B, best guess is Curley. Also possible McCully starts instead of Doyle, but McCully has been much better as a reliever.

I'm seeing 7 starting pitchers in Kanny.

Brennan

Danish

Olacio

Hansen

Montas

Bucciferro

Leyer

Maybe someone or two heading to relief, or up or down. No reason that Blough at WS or Doyle at B'Ham should slow down anyone on the rise this season. Lot of interesting arms to watch throughout the system, starting this Thursday.
