The UC is STILL a worse neighborhood than USCF is. It really isn't even close.

Wrigley Field is in a more crime-ridden area than USCF. Yet people instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano.

This applies more to the NBA, but the findings are interesting in terms of their application to MLB as well. (The original query was how much the Clippers would sell for.)

Nate Silver has found a direct correlation between city/metropolitan statistical areas' GDP's as well as number of billionaires AND franchise valuations, with Oklahoma City being one of the few outliers.

39,142 today, biggest crowd of the year. Now Brooks Boyer just needs to figure out a way to have Tanaka and Jeter play in the other 80 home games

It was real nice to see a lot of people in the seats even though probably 10,000 of them were Yankees fan.

As of a couple of days ago, our attendance was down 17.6% year over year.

Now, it's probably closer to 13-15% down (including Sat/Sun).

And, with all that that said, we still would need to average around 23,000 per month for the rest of the year to get to the 2013 attendance total of 1.76 million.

From this point last season (where the 8 game losing streak hit), the attendance average actually was lower for the final 57 games (by about 500) than the average for the first 23.

Is that true? Is Wrigley a gang area or something?

Wrigley most likely has crimes related to alcohol- public intoxication, DUI's, etc. The area around USCF is pretty underrated. It's not even close to being ghetto unless you go down 6-7 blocks. I have always parked on Union and 37th and have never had an issue with anyone walking to and from the game.

Wrigley has more RAPES, muggings, and MURDERS than the area by Sox park.

Warm weather is finally upon us, and the team looks to be much more competitive than last year's. i suspect attendance will perk up a bit.

don't forget the sox gave out a ton of comps in april and may, and those butt sin seats don't apply to the posted attendance.

Here we have another "bellweather" game, Memorial Day...national holiday, etc.

Attendance=17,075

LAA at Seattle=22,710

don't know why, but a game was scheduled AT TORONTO for a traditional American holiday=15,616

All other games (12) played on Memorial Day around the majors=AVG of 37,502

KC and the Twins both over 30,000

Team is gonna have to win, win, win for the Sox to draw. You know that, Caufield. .500 is nice but not enough to bring most people out more than once or twice all year (unless they find free tix). I KNOW there are bargains. Nobody wants to sit in the upper tank (even though some of you say they are good seats). People want good seats and they don't want to spend money on a baseball game more than a time or two all year. It's like an outing to Great America. Same deal. That's my line and I'm sticking with it.

Apparently Sox fans are more patriotic and chose to do things more memorable than baseball.

so glad you KNOW what all these people think.

the upper deck are not bad seats and my wife and I have made the trek up from Indy numerous times per year (we even drive back the same day)

so no we don't WANT good seats, most in the park are good enough, we'll spend a little extra on one game and get "Good" seats but that doesn't change the experience.

and we do want to spend money on baseball games, so that's why we fly out to Spring Training for the past 8 years and also attend about 4-5 games each summer in Chicago while driving up from Indy.

Stop acting like you know, cause really you don't.

I for one don't mind the upper deck, especially for the price. But, I'll agree with the fact that a lot of people just aren't going to want to spend money to go to too many Sox games. My family and I will probably make one this year, which is what we usually do every year.

One a side note, Greg, you'll appreciate this. Going to see minor league baseball is cheap. I've been to two Joliet Slammers games this year, and front row along the third base line cost me $10. This past Friday, the team was playing the Normal Cornbelters. Ozzie Guillen's son plays on that team, and Ozzie was there watching. Took my kids over to meet him. He was very nice and took a picture with the kids.

I haven't following this thread too much, but based on your post, it sounds like Sox fans are either the cheapest, or the most fair weathered fans in baseball, or we just don't have a large fan base anymore (which is not entirely true, given we are still 13th in FB following, and 20th in Twitter following)

If you are buying tickets on the day of the game on Stubhub, you can easily sit at the lower level for ~$20, and like others point out, even the UD are not bad at all. Given that, the cost of going to a game for a family (including parking and food) is only marginally higher, not significantly higher, for the Sox than other baseball teams. Take into account income level for the average fans in Chicago compared to other cities, fans can definitely attend games more often, but they are choosing not to because they are spending their money elsewhere, just not Sox games. Which is fine, but it just shows the how much the fans really invest in the team.

On a side note, I attended the Yankees game with friends this past Saturday, I knew I can score cheaper tickets on the day of so I waited till Sat morning to go on Stubhub. I end up getting 4 Gold Box seats between the on deck circle Yanks dugout for $50 a seat. It was only 25 rows or so up, but by the 5th inning we moved up to the empty seats on the 4th row and was literally 30 feet from the field. It wasn't hard, great seats can be had for $50 or so, even for one of the hottest games of the year.

And you can't compared going to Great America to going to a baseball game. One is mostly a weekend activity that you go with the entire family for the whole day. The other you can go even during week nights, and should take about 4-5 hours or so.

Pricing was higher than a normal Monday. That's always a factor.

I am curious, did other teams not raise their price for Memorial Day as well? It must be a significant price hike if we only drew 17K and average around the majors was 37K according to Caufield.

Dynamic pricing basically kills day of game or day before game impulse buying, except for Family Sunday where cheap options are all over, and that was SRO this past Sunday. You can go to Stubhub. I wish the Sox would just kill that model. It cannot be working.
