Harry Chappas
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Gordon was taught that when he moved to the outfield though..... You can not teach instincts. You can work on positioning and taking good routes to a ball but the ability to react at the crack of the bat you cannot teach. Cal Ripken was a prime example of being able to read a ball off the bat immediately. I am not saying Garcia cannot improve he can, in certain facets and his speed will help but he will always have flaws and be inconsistent.
Jose Abreu
Gillaspie with a nice catch. 1-2-3 inning for Johnson.
twincitysox
QUOTE (shakes @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) Outfielders absolutely can improve. And he was not getting to that ball in the first from where he was positioned. I agree that they can improve and I am not going to state as fact that he could get to that ball but in general, when you see him make his first move on the ball it appears to be very slow or just plain wrong in many cases. He has a long way to go to be an average fielder. He appears to be a liability in the field to me, IMO. He certainly doesn't come across as a good/great outfielder by any stretch. For the record, I like him and I definitely want him to do well.
Balta1701
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 05:11 PM) Jim Edmonds v Rob Mackowiak, one had a great ability to read a bat off the bat the other did not. Actually Edmonds's defense stats (yes a bit early in their existence) are quite remarkable. He had a couple really great early career defensive seasions, but then from 1998 on his defense gradually got better every single year until it peaked in 2005. First I wonder if the early-career ones were just related to data quality, but second, this looks a whole lot like the stat line of a guy who gradually got better on defense over his entire career due to wroking at it. Dunt
QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 4, 2014 -> 04:15 PM) So weird seeing Paulie in the dugout all the time. He's just chilling like Conor Gillaspie's jaw.

Jose Abreu
So is the DJR patch on the opposite sleeve with the road jerseys?
Jose Abreu
Also, I recall last year (even this early in the season) we often donned the road/home pants (depending on where we were playing) with the black alternate top. I haven't seen that yet. Edited April 4, 2014 by Jose Abreu

Gordon was an infielder and learned how to play outfield in the majors. I don't get how you now can pin bad fielding on a guy who is 22 and athletic. Jose Abreu
Maybe Johnson can go 6+. 64 pitches through 3.2 and 5 in a row retired. Edit: Jinxed Edited April 4, 2014 by Jose Abreu

flavum
Sox need a legitimate long reliever in the pen. When you're going to lose anyway, you need one guy that's going to take one for the team, so you have a fresh pen the next day.

Yeah need that rubber armed guy especially if you are breaking in new starters. It's a must. Which is why 2 DHs sucks IMO.
