TheFutureIsNear
Former top 100 prospect for Braves and Pirates. He's 26 now and hasn't really shown the ability to hit at a major league level yet but he is a plus defender in the outfielder with good speed. Looks as though he has shown the ability to get on base at a decent clip though. In reality it's a long shot and probably nothing, but worth a shot for some cash Jerry found in his sock draw. He still has a shot to be a useful bench player.

oldsox
Sox could have promoted one of the outfielders at Birmingham. Instead we pay for an outfielder from KC org who is hitting .231. I don't get it.

TheFutureIsNear
QUOTE (oldsox @ Apr 10, 2014 -> 09:50 PM) Sox could have promoted one of the outfielders at Birmingham. Instead we pay for an outfielder from KC org who is hitting .231. I don't get it. Who exactly would you have suggested from AA? There's nothing wrong with this move at all. Former very highly regarded prospect who is still only 26 who is a + defender and has wheels. So why not?
oldsox
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2014 -> 09:03 PM) This is filler for Charlotte, nothing more. So why can't they promote Josh Richmond from B'ham and call him filler. He is hitting around .350. Or even Trayce. Makes no sense. Chalk it up to Organizational Morale. Sometimes I think that baseball decision makers don't have the sense that God gave a Goose.

Jake
Yeah, Thompson is getting a chance to repeat this level because he is supremely talented and we need to see if pulling back the reins can result in him becoming somewhere near as productive as his talent level allows for. I don't get it. /facepalm You're upset because the White Sox got a guy for as close to free as possible per the league guidelines, and someone is upset. Jesus f***ing Christ. If the guy sucks, guess what happens? They don't play him, and he gets released. You mentioned Josh Richmond. Josh Richmond's career minor league splits are such: .245/.321/.408/.728. You know how many games he's played above A ball? 7 games. All this year. ---- Nice depth move, may as well take a chance on talent. I've always liked Gorkys. oldsox
Wite, pardon me, please. All I'm doing is making comments about current events. Don't get so upset. Obviously, one of our best players gets hurt and is out for the season. Danks is the automatic option to take Garcia's spot. Done. Now there is a spot open in Charlotte. So far, we should be in agreement. In football there is an old expression when a guy gets hurt: "Next man up". Now, I know, I know there is not an exact correlation between the two sports, but, still, it seems natural to see if there is someone at the next lower level that can take Jordan's spot at Charlotte. It doesn't look like that's what happened. Very quickly there was a conversation between KC and the White Sox, and the result was KC sold Hernandez to the Sox for some amount of cash. On first blush it looks as if Sox took him off their hands, because if he were a valuable piece, they would have asked for more compensation. KC possibly needed the roster spot at Omaha to move up one of their prospects, or at least I would not be surprised at that. I threw Richmond's name out there, I admit, a bit prematurely. Sorry. I could have used other names, like Michael Earley. Using your theory of preparedness for promotion, you should ask how many games has he played above A ball. That's what you did with Richmond. Well, the answer is about 165 games. Looks like he is qualified, based on your initial criterium. Maybe Hernandez is a better player/prospect than Earley. I don't really know. But a lot of us on this board, including you and me, have been following Sox minor leaguers from the day of signing. That includes Michael Earley. He has progressed nicely through the system, not on a rocket ship like Mike Trout, but he has had some success to warrant being the next man up. That was my initial point. Just as you said about Hernandez, if he doesn't play well at Charlotte, you can exercise other options. It just makes good business sense to promote from within when possible, all other things being equal. Of course, having said all of this, Hernandez will probably hit the cover off the ball at Charlotte, Earley will go into an immediate tailspin, and you will remind me of this post. Meanwhile, I'll pull for Hernandez to do well at Charlotte, and you'll pull for Earley and Richmond and Thompson to do well at Birmingham. lasttriptotulsa
I honestly think this might be the first time I've ever seen somebody get upset over the Sox going through another team's dumpster and taking some of their minor league fodder off their hands. elrockinMT
Go easy on each other please. Hernandez fill in at Charlotte and maybe by some miracle he regains some form of what was expected of him we might have a sub OF'er if needed. I think that most likely Tekotte gets called first though if the need arises.
