Dark Horse Pick for 2014

Cleuluis Rondon seems to be taking a huge step with his bat so far. If he can be just competent with his offense, he'll shoot up the prospect ranks.

But my pick is Trey Michalczewski. Only 19 years old, a sound defender at 3B, and already showing great plate discipline and hit tool. He hasn't hit a ton of home runs so far, but he has pop.

If Rondon hits, he's obviously a guy who can move up the lists quickly. Michalczewski looks good so far too, could see him moving up, though he's not really a dark horse. Pitchers like Montas and Lopez will be back from injury soon and could move up quickly.

If you want a super-dark horse, I'm a fan of Recchia's, even though he should really be in AA or AAA age-wise. I think he sees AA this year.

Going into the year I thought Ravelo could be a surprise guy, and he still might, though he's started a bit slow. Hansen and Andrew Mitchell good candidates too.

With all the guys who will likely graduate from the the FS list by July: Abreu (1), Johnson (2), Davidson maybe (3), Semien (4), Webb (11), Petricka (15), maybe more... there should be room for a lot of guys to move up.

Can someone explain the Wendelken love to me? He sounds/looks like a control/command guy (though 2.77 BB/9 last year not exactly great) with marginal stuff. Not sure what's to get excited about there.

He has a career 9.0 SO/9 and 2.4 BB/9 rate and has only allowed six home runs over 122.2 innings. He just recently turned 21 and is flourishing in a new role starting this year. He doesn't have ace upside, but he could certainly be a solid rotation member in a system that is sorely lacking quality pitching depth.

I doubt he stays a starter. I think he's the classic White Sox reliever spending time as a starter to get better at pitching, vs throwing.

If he keeps pitching well as a starter, he's young enough to run with it. But still, he could be a high leverage reliever. As a throw in piece in a trade, I'll take that.

Saladino. Not a bandwagon pick either, was a good looking prospect for a couple seasons until injury bug bit him. He's shown a pretty decent power/speed combo for a middle infielder and looks like he's finally putting it together this year. He's been a favorite of mine for a while now, hoping he can keep healthy.

I like that pick, and you're right, he's having an absolutely phenomenal year thus far. If nothing else, the Sox middle infield depth is looking really solid right now.

Just a few quick...Engel, Michalczewski, Rondon, Ayala, Guerrero

Now there is a hell of a dark horse pick. I like his upside in a sense, but my god is he freaking raw. I'm on the bandwagon though.. I just think he will shine next season, however.

slightly off topic, but just wondering what Bassitt's injury is?

Is he out for the season or will he pitch this season?

As mentioned in the transactions thread yesterday, he's told us it is a minor, non-baseball injury, and that he expects to be back very soon. That was, however, a couple weeks ago.

Andrew Mitchell.

Great name. I hope he can continue starting but he's another one of these guys that could be dominant in the bullpen. Keith Law is obviously just 1 source, but he had Mitchell as his 35th overall player in the draft last year. Sox drafted Mitchell in round 4.

I would be shocked if Michalczewski gets promoted. He's young enough to finish a full year and still be well ahead of pace.
