South Side Fireworks Man
QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 06:41 PM) Gillaspie should go to the DL, Semien starts ED at 3B. In the future, he's going to be either 2B or SS. He may very well field well enough to be a SS. Micah Johnson is far from a sure thing and his ability to be an infielder is completely up in the air. Then why not start Semien every day at 2B and let Beckham play 3B until Gillaspie gets back?
caulfield12
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 05:52 PM) Then why not start Semien every day at 2B and let Beckham play 3B until Gillaspie gets back? Because Beckham hasn't played much 3B since 2009, whereas Semien has shown the ability to play all three positions recently. Maybe if a team looking to acquire Beckham asked Hahn to see him there a couple of times, but the risk of reinjuring the oblique/strain (at another position) is probably a couple of degrees higher than at the one position he's most comfortable and familiar with. There are lots of faster/reaction/quick twitch plays at 3B, and then he would also have to make the throw across the diamond and against his body coming in on the bunt. That's a good way to get hurt again. Semien also has the better arm for 3B...although Gordo's is decent. Cerbaho-WG
The only reason why Gordon Beckham still has a major league job is because he's a former first round draft pick. Beckham hasn't changed much in the last four years. He's abysmal at the plate and has a good glove leading to a WAR of about 1/season. For a rebuilding team there is no excuse to have Beckham take any PA away from Semien. Semien is much more valuable next year with as many big league PA as possible under his belt this year. If Gordon's oblique injury is still bothering him enough that it would would prevent him from throwing across his body he probably should still be on the DL, not taking a spot on the major league roster. Let him heal up so he can come back and play without restriction.
Vance Law
QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 08:24 PM) Beckham hasn't changed much in the last four years. He's abysmal at the plate and has a good glove leading to a WAR of about 1/season. He was a better hitter than Alexei last year despite battling through injuries. He was a better hitter than Alexei in 2012. Complain about Alexei with the same vociferousness.
greg775
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 08:08 PM) No. Marcus Semien is not Gordon Beckham, they should have absolutely nothing to do with each other when talking about Marcus' timeline and development. Marcus has already shown that he's just not going to crawl into a hole and die if he's scuffling, he can work through any problems he might have up here. I actually think it's much better for him to be up here facing the best competition rather than guys he's more advanced than in aaa. To me, it's better for Marcus and for the team if he's our starting 2b and I don't want him getting sent down because we're stuck with Gordon Beckham. This post says it all. He was a SS in college and the minors. Sox moved him to 2B and he is a plus defender there too. Semien right now seems to be the ideal super IF sub. He can play all three positions. There is nothing wrong in todays game to have such aperson. In thje past they were seen as a fillin but today they play an integral role in building a roster. Just so it's stated every time someone says this...no he isn't. He was a plus defender there in 2011 but he has gotten progressively worse there every season. He's at best average, maybe even slightly below average there. He turns the DP well but his range has decreased and he's gotten sloppier. He committed 12 errors at 2b last year while playing only 100 games, making him one of the sloppiest 2b in the league. Just to say it...he had a worse fielding percentage than Dan Uggla! Chisoxfn
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 08:11 PM) I hate that this is true It isn't. Beckham needs to be playing the utility role, not Semien. Semien is more important to the future and for the time being should be getting the bulk of the starter at bats and continue to develop. Chisoxfn
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 08:13 AM) I mean, you can't really cite a guy's rehab stint at AA when he's got a track record of better (but not good) performance in the majors over several years. The fact is, Semien has hit in a timely but overall crappy manner. Beckham's going to continue to get his last shot. I think with Ramirez, you can just stick this together with Beckham, Viciedo, DeAza, the catchers, Conor and nearly everyone playing terrible defense all season long. Not the sign of a decline, more of an anomaly...as Ramirez has mostly been great this season.
Chicago White Sox
I think Beckham could have used more rehab time: AA slash: .163/.234/.279/.513 (wRC+ 48) Majors: 0-7 with a 42.9% K rate Small sample sizes I know, but if he's not 100% yet then we should have called up Carlos Sanchez if we needed an extra infielder for a week.
