Chisoxfn
The wasting an option on him is the only negative. Neal got to come up to the majors and experience it. No, he wasn't as sucessful as he'd of liked to be or as the Sox wanted him to be or as the fans wanted him to be, but it isn't a naught cause. Now Neal knows exactly what he has to do to get better and if he's gonna be sucessful, which I think he is, he's got to just work and work and work and get better and better. He'll help the Barons over the stretch run and then throw a few innings in the AFL, something I am kind of against, other then the fact they are teaching him a cutter, which I like. IF it were me, I'd start limiting his innings now, since they plan on using him in winter ball.
MnSoxFan
Hate to waste an option when did not need to. Stupid, we did same thing with Ginter in 2000. Wish Stumm was going to Fall League instead of Cotts, if he went there and was solid in relief, he could maybe make the squad next season. JUGGERNAUT
I'm going to make this simple for the Cotts supporters. His walk totals sucked in the ml's & are worse in the MLs. YOU CAN'T PITCH IN THE AL WITH A 5/6 WALK per START AVG. PERIOD! He might survive in the NL w that, but never the AL. He needs to stay in the minors until the walk totals decline. Period. Cerbaho-WG
We all know there have been no pitchers ever who were shellacked in their first season ever succeeded afterwards.

Haven't heard anything about him coming back to Birmingham.

Replaced in the starting rotation does not equal being sent to the Minors. I don't think he will be sent out because the Minor League season is over Monday. Also, there is a date after which you cannot bring down a player from a higher level. It is to keep teams from loading up for the playoffs. That date has passed. I doubt the Southern League would grant permission for Cotts to join the Barons. My guess is he is kept on the Sox roster and he will pitch when the opportunity arises, while they work with him on the side. In that case, no option is burned. They may have to assign him to the Minor Leagues, however, if they need to activate someone else before Monday so they will be eligible for the playoffs. That would be the exception. Im just going by what Phil rogers said. He said that Cotts was being sent down this weekend and he indicated that KW may be near another deal. It wasnt just not being in the rotation any longer. However, i saw no facts proving Rogers to be right, so who knows. Also, isnt Koch due back this weekend?

He's going to be sent down. He's out of the starting rotation, and his control isn't good enough, even for Manuel to have him come out of the bullpen. I don't know if he'll pitch for Birmingham or not. Probably not. His next appearance will probably be in the fall league. Knowing how JM waffles with every decision he ever makes, this probably means Cotts will appear in tonight's game.

MnSoxFan
I may have been wrong about burning the option, that may have already happened if he was on 40-man roster to start the season, if that was the case his option was used when sent down in the spring. If so, my bad.

BurlyMan56
Could have had Steve Sparks to fill Danny's spot. Throw the knuckle ball and then you have Marte & Gordon throwing heat and the junk in the 8th and 9th.
