How horrendous was Viciedo's error on a scale of 1 to 10? Lost it in the lights? Overran? Just a misplay? Whiffed? Juggled?

Just plain dropped the ball. Hit his glove and to the ground.

Tank needs to be in left field, where he's less awful.

You're really going to play DeAza or Eaton in RF?

That's an even worse idea.

Or you want Danks to play everyday, with Viciedo and Dunn DHing?

Hard to give up Viciedo's bat, isn't it?

A 7 for the drop, add 3 for failing to pick the ball up first time like he does a hell of a lot

Um yes? Suicide squeezes are completely on the manager.

And at some point management has to take blame when we fail the same basic routine over...And over...And over...And over...And over...again with many different players.

While I do find RockRaines completely condesending right now, I can't figure out how you blame ANYONE for that perfectly executed suicide squeeze? That's a basehit against any team, in any situation that doesn't call for a drawn-in infield. There isn't a single thing Robin could have done other than put Semien in on bunt defense, which would be suspect.

He's literally just dropped 3 balls these last 3 games. I'm certainly not disagreeing that he's better in left but that shouldn't have mattered with these drops.

Yeah, it's a tough situation because it's hard to imagine continuing to put him out there if he simply can't catch the ball. However, that's exactly what they need to do.

I didn't blame him for that?

Maybe I'm wrong here, but Semien hasn't looked good on bunts.

A good manager needs to know what his players are capable of.

Therefore, that play was both bad managing and bad execution.

Holaday didn't get the squeeze sign.

And Ventura isn't going anywhere during a rebuild so anyone who continues to think that's going to happen should just give up now.

Not only did he drop a flyball in his glove, but then he failed to pick up the ball which allowed Jackson to reach 3B, which set up the suicide squeeze. He could have gotten one of those 2 mistakes right and we may still be in a tie ball game right now.

Who's the last player our system produced who could actually bunt with any degree of confidence?

Maybe Getz?

Part of it's a symptom of the times, but geez, you'd think we would want to have one Japanese/Korean player (like Iguchi) who could actually set an example of how to do something so simple that most of us learned in Little League.

Maybe coaches are afraid their best high school/college hitters will break their fingers or foul the ball off their face, but it has gotten ridiculous the last 20 years as a lost art in the game.

That's the second time now he's allowed an extra base with lackadaisical recovery....the other time, he assumed Beckham would get it, but Gordon had already careened off in another direction.

Eaton is one of the best bunters around

Bunting is the dumbest play in baseball IMO. I detest it outside of a leadoff hitter who gets on base that way.

Ventura called for the suicide squeeze. Semien fails miserably.

Detroit then calls one against us and it was beautiful for them unfortunately.

It wasn't a suicide squeeze though, that's why I'm not positive if that was Robin. It probably was but it could have been Marcus on his own.

I'm not blaming Ventura for the loss, but putting a player in a position to fail should go against the manager. Can't just blame the player for a lack of execution.

Agreed...heck, even the bunt by Semien that ended up being a big play in Sunday's game would have taken the bat out of Abreu's hands if it was fielded correctly.

I hate that play regardless, but you still have to execute if you are called upon as a pro

But it's still dumb.

De Aza came up as a CFer with LA and Florida. I don't know where this idea that De Aza is absolutely terrible at defense (even worse than Viciedo) came from. His UZR and DRS at the corner outfield positions have been solid. He was never a good CFer, but you could live with his shortcomings without wanting to tear your hair out.

Can somebody tell me why Marcus was moved from the 2-hole and Gordo and his immaculate Buck-something BA was there? Just got home...

I don't know, it was real odd.

It happened over the weekend for some weird reason. Gordon had been hitting the ball hard, but the results weren't there.
