WHITE SOX MAKE THREE ROSTER MOVES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sunday, May 4, 2014

 

CLEVELAND – Prior to today’s game at Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox added outfielder Moises Sierra to the active roster and sent third baseman Conor Gillaspie to Class AAA Charlotte on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

 

Sierra, 25, was claimed off waivers from Toronto on Saturday and takes the roster spot of left-handed pitcher Frank De Los Santos, who was optioned to Charlotte following last night’s game against the Indians.

 

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Sierra was designated for assignment on May 1 after going 2-34 (.059) in 34 games with the Blue Jays this season. He batted .290 (31-107) with 13 RBI and 11 runs scored in 35 games with Toronto in 2013, including a .317 (26-82) average with 12 doubles and 11 RBI in September. Sierra ranked among the AL September leaders in doubles (3rd), extra-base hits (T4th, 14), slugging percentage (8th, .524) and on-base percentage (9th, .385).

 

Sierra is a career .229 hitter (66-288) with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 97 games over three seasons with Toronto (2012-14).

 

He will wear uniform No. 25.

 

Gillaspie, 26, has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 26 (retro to April 22) with a left hand contusion. He is batting .302 (19-63) with 12 RBI and eight runs scored in 16 games with the White Sox this season.
