MexSoxFan#1
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) CONCACAF kicking some ass. Yeah, Honduras is basically out but hopefully the US and Mexico (CR is already in) make it to the next round. African and Asian teams have disappointed so far and it would be cool if CONCACAF is universally seen as the third best region in world soccer. Rowand44
It's kind of crazy how hit and miss some of the powers have been so far. Obviously Spain is gone, Brazil hasn't looked good at all, same with Argentina, Italy not the best so far. The Dutch, Germany and I guess France are really the only top teams looking really good so far.
bmags
I guess France? The French have looked by far the best to me.

The I guess part was about them being a power as they weren't a favorite or anything coming in.

Absolutely, but Messi is capable of making a goal out of seemingly nothing at any moment so that's all you need to be in a game. Games aren't decided by the number of chances you create or if you take the extra touch or not, it's about goals. He has had mediocre games with great, game-deciding goals in both matches. That's all you need.

caulfield12
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 12:41 PM) Absolutely, but Messi is capable of making a goal out of seemingly nothing at any moment so that's all you need to be in a game. That's all you need. That prevent defense Iran was playing was quite effective and also led to a number of scoring possibilities on the counter-attack. While it can make for some boring and frustrating soccer from a viewing perspective, tactically it's the smartest approach for a team that's outmatched talent-wise. For all intents and purposes, Messi continues to be a one man team, and you have to imagine he'll simply get worn down as the Cup moves forward unless someone like Levezzi emerges to serve as a counter-punch and attract at least some attention from the "box and one" defense. chw42
Bosnia got robbed. They also had two great shots at the end to at least tie it. What a shame.
chw42
I actually don't like the fact Germany couldn't beat Ghana. The US most likely isn't going to beat Germany. Even if we draw them, Germany will still finish first based on goal differential. However, Ghana drawing keeps them alive. A loss by Ghana would have basically eliminated them. A draw against Portugal would have been enough for the US to basically advance, but now it seems like they pretty much have to win or at least draw twice. In the case where Ghana wins against Portugal, we'll have to win based on goal differential (I don't believe FIFA cares for beating another team head-to-head, that's only taken into account if goal differential and goals scored are the same). chw42
QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 20, 2014 -> 06:44 PM) Only if you believe those bogus rankings. Yup, those FIFA Coke rankings are a joke. I've been looking at SPI, but even that's not all that accurate.
kev211
Why isn't the tie breaker head to head first? That would make too much sense apparently.
chw42
QUOTE (kev211 @ Jun 21, 2014 -> 11:57 PM) Why isn't the tie breaker head to head first? That would make too much sense apparently. That's what makes sense, but it's not what FIFA does. Here's the list of tiebreakers that FIFA would use. They start with the first scenario, and go down the list until one of the rules breaks the tie. Greatest number of points obtained in all the group matches. Goal difference in the group matches. Greatest number of goals scored in the group matches. Almost every time, ties will be broken by one of those three rules. However, should the teams remained tied, FIFA has more tiebreakers. Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned. Greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned. Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organizing Committee.
