IlliniKrush
QUOTE (Jake @ May 30, 2014 -> 05:59 PM) There's a lot of money to be made being good at what you do. The guy who comes up with the way to prevent pitching injuries is going to make a bunch of money Float it.

Kalapse
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 31, 2014 -> 12:33 AM) There was a "This Week In Baseball" about Pedro Martinez years ago. He had the biggest fingers I've ever seen. He could bend every finger back to his wrist. He was a freak. He was the best pitcher I've ever seen. He put up ungodly numbers, right through the apex of the so called "steroid era." He was tiny. Yeah, I second this. The greatest I've ever seen, the best of his generation (sans Maddux) and an all time great. Just the thought of Pedro gets me all swole in the penis area. That dude who made the steroid freaks look pathetic, that 5'10" b**** on his 3rd team with that rising fastball, disappearing change and swagger for days, as if Brian Jordan's stance wasn't f***ing stupid enough, he amplified it with his ridiculousness. The nastiest mother f***er to ever stand 10 inches above the ground. Buhner and Junior just look stupid when faced with true perfection. I'd kiss him if I ever saw him.
Texsox
It sounds like Jack was a disgruntled patient at some time. It seems that today pitchers have to abuse their bodies to stay in the game. The very things that could help extend their careers would make them less effective as pitchers which would end their careers.
southsider2k5
QUOTE (BamaDoc @ May 30, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) I also recall an article in which Jack discussed warm up pitches both before a game and between innings. He always used less there and commented that no one counts those. He has a valid point. If you are exerting max or near max effort it doesn't matter if a batter is there. He talked of using 2-3 less per inning warming up than allowed, he was pitching in the day of complete games so 18-27 less "pitches" warming up meant 1-2 more innings. I have heard Cooper talk about exactly that kind of stuff when talking about extending pitchers. The Sox track all of that stuff.

I was at the game the night Peavy detached his lat. if anyone ever watches Jake Peavy warm up between innings, he basically lobs about 8 balls to the catcher and then is ready to go. But the thing that night that was odd was his pre-game warm up. Usually you see them playing catch in the OF and stretching out the distance. Then they go in the bullpen and seem to throw about 50 pitches, but that night Peavy did not do the long toss, and really threw about 15 pitches in the bullpen. I doubt it had anything to do with causing what happened, other than maybe he was hurting so much because it was probably at least partially detached at that point that he didn't want the extra work, but we both thought is was really odd.
