Stupid. Somebody should have asked Robin if he liked playing the outfield in case he was needed out there. Sox are desperate for outfielders obviously.

Let's just say with this "Semien improved versatility move," the odds are decreasing that they're realistically looking at replacing Alexei Ramirez at any point in the near future.

 

If they're going to replace him with anyone, Tim Anderson's the only one close to the talent level of Ramirez. Nobody imagines he would make less than 30-40 errors in his rookie season in the big leagues, but he at least has UPSIDE at that position, vs. Sanchez and Semien who are more replacement level players at that position if you take both offense and defense into account.

I agree. In a couple of years we might have a better idea, but certainly not now. I know he isn't the greatest fielder ever but in the minors before he was called up, Jeter had 21 errors in 57 games. Followed that up with 56 errors in 126 games. Then had 25 in 138 and 29 in 123. That's 131 errors in 444 games. Maturing, getting to play on better fields and having a first baseman who can save you a couple can make a big difference.

Agreed, people need to remember how raw Anderson was. He is seeing a huge jump in talent from his JuCo where he came from. Balls are being hit harder and base runners are faster. He is learning more advanced technique and timing. This will all take time and he has time.

Also worth noting, I remember reading an article last year about Winston Salems infield being in pretty bad shape condition wise as well. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case with most every minor league stadium.

That doesn't sound as accurate as saying the same year after he was drafted out of high school, he made 21 errors right after he turned 18 and then 56 errors at Greensboro in 1993 when he was 18/19.

When Ozzie Smith was 22 he was in A ball and made 23 errors in 65 games. I'm not saying Anderson is destined to be a GG quality SS, he may in fact turn out to be so brutal they have to move him, but as of now, these errors are no big deal.

This x100. Luis Aparicio is considered one of the greatest defensive shortstops of all time, and he made 35 errors his rookie year and routinely made 20-25 errors a season.

 

Errors are not a great way of determining the quality of a player defensively. If Anderson gets to the ball, fires a little low or wide, and the 1B muffs it, they are going to call that error on Anderson 9 times out of 10 when in reality a quality 1B makes that play most of the time. These guys are just figuring out how to play at that speed, which is why they're in the low minors.

Or take Micah Johnson as an example, he committed 29 errors last season and is on pace for 18 this season. Anderson may end up in the OF eventually and he will never be Rondon with the glove because very few are, but he has a good of chance to stick at short as anyone. As is repeated ad nauseam on the board, he is pretty raw in a baseball sense.
