@brettaustin_3 saw you fav'd my tweet. Any thoughts? Disagree?

keithlaw @keithlaw · Jun 10

Karsten Whitson, Brett Austin, and DeAndre Smelter all could have had $1M+ in 2011 and didn't sign. Austin might get half. Other two get zip

Smelter has the chance to make good money as a receiver in next year's NFL draft.

With today's signings, Sox look to have around just short of $400k in savings to use towards Rodon or ~$6.1million total. #MLBDraft

My inclination is that a deal on the bonus amount with Rodon is in place. I just do not see how Hahn would have signed the other 9 top ten picks and them come to Boras crying poor. Boras and Hahn are too sophisticated for that. It is not the bonus any longer it is when major league service time starts. Just waiting for the pieces to fall. Remember, we also are three weeks from the International signing period that will bring more talent into the system. Strap it down friends!!!

I believe he is Ed Sprague's nephew.

FutureSox.com ‏@FutureSox Jun 7. Jed Sprague's father was All-Star Major

Leaguer Ed, and his mom won a gold medal at 1992 olympics #bloodlines #

We have him listed as signed because he was in a Sox uniform taking BP at The Cell a couple days ago - but it is possible he hasn't actually signed, maybe there is a delay for some reason, or maybe his BP session was just a favor. The FS Tracker has been updated to reflect that.

Sickels on Sox draft:

Chicago White Sox

1-3) Carlos Rodon, LHP, North Carolina State

2-44) Spencer Adams, RHP, White County HS, GA

3-77) Jace Fry, LHP, Oregon State University

4-108) Brett Austin, C, North Carolina State

COMMENT: For all the "concerns" about Rodon this spring, you might not realize that he cut a full run off his ERA compared to last year and still fanned 117 guys in 99 innings. His walk rate was lower, too. Was he being nitpicked and prospect fatigued? Adams was one of the best high school right-handers on the market with his athleticism and arm strength and would have been an easy first rounder some years. Fry doesn’t have the same level of stuff as Rodon and Adams but was a very successful college strike-thrower. Austin was Rodon’s batterymate and hit very well this year (.344/.414/.516) though scouts continue to have mixed opinions. College picks were emphasized in middle and later rounds, with players of particular interest including defensive specialist and OBP source Jake Peter (SS, Creighton, 7th round), power bat Zach Fish (OF, Oklahoma State, 11th round), and Matt Cooper (RHP, Hawaii, 16th round) who posted a 1.60 ERA with a 106/28 K/BB in 107 innings while using an 86 MPH fastball. Likely unsignable: Bryce Montes de Oca, RHP, 14th round.

First time I've seen someone say they like Peter.

Yeah, we've seen a lot more praise for the likes of Jarvis or Mason Robbins.

Matt Cooper sounds like Dylan Axelrod.

They have Cooper at 86 mph?

Okay that makes more sense. The scouting report I read had him at like 90 to low 90s and a huge curve ball. All while putting up filthy stats. I was trying to figure out how he didn't go in the first couple rounds.

It's nice to get the Big 12 player of the year in the 11th round, especially with college bats being at such a premium.

Still don't like anything I read about Jake Peter.

I still won't be surprised if he signs for slot.

Hey Keith- What's your opinion on the white sox signing picks 2-10 before Rodon? Is it a good move removing the negotiations from the process and just admitting this is what we have left to offer?

I thought so. You're playing chicken a little bit - you have to be willing to lose the player and get the pick next year - but it puts Rodon in a position where he has to walk away from probably $6 million, but can't reasonably ask for more because it would require them giving up their top 2015 pick.

And any pitcher who walks away from $6 million probably doesn't want to play baseball that badly. Or else he just has a lot of insurance.

Rodon/Bor-ASS would be foolish to turn 6 mil down. Rodon will not find a better situation to come into than the Sox. Holliday his college pitching coach even said so.
