Give it another week, then it won't be so laughable. Boras said to be waiting for #2 pick Kolek to sign with Marlins. I'm just glad that Boras doesn't represent both. Kolek's agent is probably waiting for Rodon to sign. Rodon is sitting around eating potato chips all day for all we know.

They don't have any leverage though. It doesn't matter what Kolek signs for. Rodon gets like $6 million. That's the deal. All the Sox can offer at this point.

Every day that Rodon doesn't sign, pisses away the small chance that he could pitch for Chicago this year.

I'd rather him not pitch for the Sox this year anyway. Wouldn't that start the clock this year? I don't want to see him. I am looking forward to him being in the Sox rotation early next year.

Only if it happened before Sept. 1st. I also don't want to see him in August. But as a September call-up? Hell yeah.

Still haven't gotten figures for the Sox 8th and 9th round picks as of yet. BUT if Ziznewski gets the same $40k as Lechich, and Clark gets his slot dollars, the Sox will have $356,300 extra money left over that they can offer to either Rodon or De Oca without going into fines territory.

For Rodon, that means they could offer him $6,077,800. If Ziznewski signs for $10,000, that number goes to $6,107,800.

Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 6m

Looks like @WhiteSox saved $385,600 vs pool in rds 2-10. If won't pay tax (haven't before), leaves max of $6,107,100 for Rodon. @MLBDraft

So that means they corrected Adams and added back the $700 they didn't have him for, and Ziznewski is a $10k bonus, while Clark is slot.

Yeah, this isn't true at all. If Rodon is called up in September he'll accrue 27 days of service (he'd probably report on 9/2 since there's no game on 9/1), there is no special condition for September call ups, they're on the major league roster therefore they earn service time.

And starting a player's "clock" isn't that big of a deal when you're talking about an advanced prospect who's a college junior. If they call him up on 9/2 he'll get 27 days of service which is nice and all but doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot in the long run. Your typical college draftee can spend upward of 7 years in the minors -- 4 years off the 40 man + 3 on -- but Rodon would see a max of 3 years in the minors since he'd be added to the 40 this year so the Sox would start burning options next year if they wanted him to start in the minors. It's nice for him in that the Sox could only send him down in 3 seasons of his career but if he's any good he's unlikely to see that much time on the farm anyway. Player's don't accrue service for time spent in the minors while on the 40 so the Sox could, in theory, put him in the pen this September, then burn options the next 2 years and have him join the rotation in July of 2017, avoid super two status and still have another option year in their back pocket.

In other words: if they call him up 2.5 months from now he'll earn a little service but it's really no biggie from a control standpoint.

OK I thought committed meant like it's a sure thing he's going back to school and the Sox have no chance of signing him. I mean i know our 2nd round pick was committed to some school too but wasn't sure how that word was being used when it comes to how that 1st post is viewed. So if someone decides to go back to school and not sign with the Sox what will it say in the 1st post ?

Committed means he has signed with a particular college and cannot blow them off and go to a different college. Has nothing to do with turning pro.

Aiken signed for $6.5 million for a near-$8-million slot value (81%). Kolek, if $6 million is true, will be signing for 88% of his slot value ($6.8 million). Sox can go about 107% of Rodon's slot value. Will be interesting to see what happens.

So what are your predictions for what Rodon signs for? There seems to be a good chance that the Sox can convince Rodon and Boras to sign for less than 6 million, perhaps even 5.9 million.

What was the slot value of the 3rd pick, anyway?

With how Aiken and Kolek both signed for below slot, the sox has more weight in trying to sign Rodon at or below slot as well so they can throw more money to Montes de Oca.

The third pick's slot value is $5,721,500. I am sure Boras will want more than the slot value and thus far the Sox have saved $385,600 in round two through ten according to Callis. Sox have $6,107,100 left to stay under its bonus cap to sign Rodon.

The Sox total bonus pool for the Draft is $9,509,700, but they can go up to about $9,985,185 without losing a Draft Pick and would just have to pay 75% of the overage of $475,485 ($356,613.75).

Boras could very well bargain for the Sox to give Rodon the remaining portion of the bonus pool + 5% overage.

The Sox could very well think it is more economically efficient to pay $1 million for Rodon (extra bonus to Rodon + overage tax) than to make a deal to get him to Chicago in September, which would start his clock.

So assuming Rodon signs for the Sox remaining top 10 allotment, approximately $6.1 million, what is the most that Montes de Oca can be offered?

I believe $100,000 if they do not want to exceed the bonus cap. But they could offer $575,485 (only the amount over $100,000 gets apportioned to the bonus cap) and then pay the 75% overage tax on that without losing a first-round draft. Not sure the Sox would do that though and not sure Montes de Oca would accept that.

and if Rodon blows us off or asks for an insane number like $7 Millionish and Sox refuse, then what can Sox offer de Oca without penalty? I thought $100,000 plus whatever they save by not signing Rodon.

And how good a prospect is he anyway, understanding that he had TJS?

Got it, and I assume they could likely offer 4 years of college as well that would not count against the cap.

It was such a disappointing year down here in Raleigh given they had Rodon, Turner, Austin, Jernigan all coming back after the CWD appearance. I think there's no way he pitches for NC State again. Slim to none.

I'm a Tar Heel fan (because of MJ) but I'm glad we got this kid.

Hope to hear an update

39th round pick Davison says he will not sign. Not a surprise, just noting it.

A few guys are tweeting out affiliate assignments now too. Some guys are already headed out, rookie teams start in LESS THAN A WEEK.

I think he was a pick out of one of their baseball academies, right? I think that is mostly for PR for the organization versus being a real draft pick. They did the same thing I think last year with picking a HS kid who was like 5'5" and 130 lbs.
