Feeky Magee
Kyle Hansen took over in relief for Montas and stranded the runners with 2 Ks and a groundout. Montas's ERA is now 1.23 on the year. Meanwhile for Charlotte, Carlos Sanchez is 1-2 with a walk, Davidson 1-3 with a HR, Saladino 1-2 with a double, Phegley 1-3 with a HR. But they're down 13-4 with De Los Santos following Johnson in getting rocked.

Feeky Magee
Rangel Ravelo 2-2, second hit at the end of the sort of long at-bat that's become his trademark
hi8is
QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 05:53 PM) Looking like a wasted year for Erik Johnson. Bizarre how this is going for him. I've never seen anything like it - last year he was fantastic and poised. Him being this way shocked me good.

Feeky Magee
My gut is that he's hurt. Which would quite frankly be a relief at this point.

You have to think the Sox have done every test imaginable on him by this point.

Could be something which doesn't show up on ordinary tests, structural shoulder fault maybe? Meanwhile Ravelo 3-

Meanwhile Ravelo 3-3 Not really. If he is being honest with the staff, they would be able to find something. Maybe it's just a learning year for him. Feeky Magee
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) Not really. If he is being honest with the staff, they would be able to find something. Maybe it's just a learning year for him. His velo is down 3-5 mph. This is the same level that he destroyed last year.
ptatc
QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) His velo is down 3-5 mph. This is the same level that he destroyed last year. That's what I mean. Learning from adversity can be a good thing. You tend to learn more when you struggle. He may learn that he will never see the MLB again as well. Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) Not really. If he is being honest with the staff, they would be able to find something. flavum
It's going to be interesting to see what Beck ends up being. 4th or 5th starter? Long reliever? Not good enough? Edited June 7, 2014 by flavum
ptatc
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 10:42 PM) Any theories on what could be causing the velocity decease if not injury? Mechanics out of whack? It's usually injuries but if they haven't shut him down by now, I would doubt it. The only thing I can think of is an injury similar to Danks where the shoulder is loose. Maybe they are seeing if he can pitch with it.

The only thing I can think of is an injury similar to Danks where the shoulder is loose. Maybe they are seeing if he can pitch with it. I am not a doctor nor do I have any medical knowledge so here is my question, does anybody know if a shoulder was over used, maybe it is worn out, needing rest? ChiliIrishHammock24
Nice start by Money Montas. His K/BB is nearing 8. That's exceptional. I wonder if he gets to AA before the all-star break.
ChiliIrishHammock24
Speaking of dudes named Montas..... Another Montas for us, Ernesto, start for our DSL team. He went 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.
caulfield12
Two Montases. Rodon and Rondon. Oh, the humanity.
ptatc
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 11:29 PM) His mechanics are horrible right now. Getting under the ball. Is that what it is? If so, it would explain the decreased velocity, decreased break on off speed pitches and keeping the ball up in the zone. Hopefully, he can get it straightened out. I usually start with decreasing the stride length.
