Melissa1334
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) Nieto. Phegley. Smith. And there is literally nothing in free agency for next year: John Buck (34) Ryan Doumit (34) Nick Hundley (31) – $5MM club option Gerald Laird (35) Russell Martin (32) Jeff Mathis (32) – $1.5MM club option Wil Nieves (36) Miguel Olivo (36) A.J. Pierzynski (38) David Ross (38) Geovany Soto (32) Kurt Suzuki (31) i think martin and suzuki are great options depending on the deal. theyre solid defensivly and hit a little. Eminor3rd
I'd love Martin on a 3-year deal to buy time for the development of the next guy. League average-ish bat, great game caller and leader (allegedly).
caulfield12
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 15, 2014 -> 12:30 PM) I'd love Martin on a 3-year deal to buy time for the development of the next guy. League average-ish bat, great game caller and leader (allegedly). The problem with Martin and Suzuki is 1) both the Pirates and Twins would love to have them back, 2) it's scary to overpay for an older catcher when they're both coming off an above average offensive season (at least at the moment) and have a lot of room for regression, especially considering you might have to offer a 3 year deal. maggsmaggs
Maybe the Sox could try to acquire Giants prospect Andrew Susac. He is stuck behind Posey and pretty much ML-ready right now. The Giants do not have a real MLB second baseman. Their starter most of the year is batting (Hicks) is batting .177 though with 8 HRs but also has an insane 32% K-rate. So a swap of Beckham for Susac would benefit both teams. Plus, the Giants do not have a top prospect at second base. Susac is athletic, which helps him behind the plate as a receiver, and he has an above-average arm. He has at least average defensive tools and has improved his game calling as a professional. Offensively, Susac's best tool is his plus power, which allows him to drive the ball to all fields. He has good pitch recognition skills and has consistently posted good on-base percentages. Susac looks like a future Major League starter behind the plate. MLB.com's prospect report on him. Granted, it's the Pacific Coast League, but he is batting .288, .388 OPB and an .892 OPS. They're not being threatened right now.

Panik? Yeah, well, maybe not "top" prospect, but someone who's playing very well at least. And it always seems like every season the Giants figure out curious ways to get offense from unexpected sources.
