Per twitter, one of the best hitters I have ever witnessed has passed away

@Boomskie: Tony Gwynn has died, his agent John Boggs just told me. It was the phone call I've been dreading. God bless, Mr. Padre. I love you. @Padres

succumbed to cancer

RIP Tony.

One of the most consistent hitters in baseball history.

Looking over his stats, he's never had a wRC+ under 100 in ANY season. That's incredible. He hit over .300 in every season but his first, where he only played 54 games and hit .289.

Along with Ripken and Jeter, one of the best ambassadors for the sport in my lifetime.

I remember collecting about 50 of his and Alan Wiggins' 1983 Fleer Rookie cards. Both of those guys died way before their time.

It would be sad if something positive didn't come out of it...even more pressure to bring to bear and the strongest argument available for the anti-tobacco movement in baseball and with teenagers in general. (Of course, being teenagers, most of them have no idea who Tony Gwynn is, but almost all of their fathers certainly do).

ill never forget after gwynn hit his 3000th hit, a reporter was interviewing him. They were talking about his habits and his dedication, as Gwynn was amongst the first video junkies - he had all his ABs on VHS tapes. He asked Gwynn how many of the hits he could recall (ie what type of hit it was, where it landed, who it was off of, what kind pitch/location), and Gwynn estimated about 2000.

2000!

He was my favorite player ever that was not a white sox. I modeled my little league and high school game most off of him. Sad day.

Also, speaks to the dangers of chewing tobacco. Wish there was more awareness around the game about it

Gwynn hit .444 for his CAREER with the bases loaded. Not pre all-star for a season, not for one season, for his WHOLE CAREER.

He had 107 PAs against Maddux and 36 against Pedro Martinez. Neither one of them ever struck him out.
