Personally no, unless it was a playoff game or something. If I am going to Vegas im doing Vegas-type s***. Maybe not everyone is a big drinker and gambler.

The stadium would be located downtown...right next to all the "vegas type s***." I think you're nuts.

Yes but can I gamble and play blackjack during the game?

I wouldn't be shocked if you could, to be honest. You can play blackjack in the damn pools now.

But seriously, you're talking about a two-hour window here...there are plenty of folks who carve out 2 hours to do things besides gamble...restaurants/shows/pool/shopping...you're taking this a bit to the extreme.

No, I said personally I wouldnt want to, which is 100% accurate. I am lucky I know what time of the day it is when I am there. And I LOVE watching games in the sportsbooks or something like Emeril Stadium.

I understand what you are saying about yourself. I disagree that is a representation of most Hawks fans or NHL fans.

Just curious...why?

IMO not a great fanbase and the ice would suck

That's part of it. It just seems gimmicky, and I don't think a team there has staying power. I don't think you're going to have a real strong fan base. How long can you live off the opposing team's fans, and the newness of having a team there?

I could just see it going bad after a few years.

Honestly, if Vegas is going to rely on Tourists to fill out the stadium rather than a stable season ticket base, than it is a really bad choice. I hear jacksonville is an up and coming spot!

I didn't say they would rely on tourists.

No, I am saying people will use their team playing there as an excuse to go there, not them randomly being here when their team is here.

When my friends and I go see the Sox or Bears on the road, we choose the coolest cities/stadiums. We then go see the game(s) and then spend the remainder of our time exploring the city.

You honestly don't think Hawks fans would plan trips to Vegas to see the Hawks play here? I just don't buy that whatsoever.

Some would. But that isn't going to be enough to sustain a team. Heck places like Phoenix and Florida have millions of northerner transplants living there year round, and still can't fill a hockey arena.`

That's why I specifically said it wouldn't. I just said it would help.

Vegas has a few million residents, and no other professional sports teams.

I don't know that it would work out in the end either, but I don't think Phoenix and Miami are good examples because these are places with many other sports teams.

Honestly, the best idea I've heard in terms of getting professional sports here is the MNF idea.

You also have to think about TV revenue. It's one thing for locals to be excited to finally have a pro team and attend a hockey game. It's another for them to watch a game on TV at 4:00 local time on a weekday vs the Hurricanes or Panthers.

Why would it be on at 4 pm?

Edit: Oh, you mean the road games...yes, well, I'm sure the west coast has dealt with that already...

Re: Vegas

I will need to do some digging, but I'm pretty sure I've seen labor reports that indicate that Vegas has a much higher percentage of residents who work 2nd shift compared to other major cities. Regardless of whether you are relying on tourists or locals to fill the stadiums and watch games on TV, you have an awful lot of them who are already busy during the hours that sporting events are typically played.

It's almost like you have to treat Vegas as a metro area that is 20-30% smaller than it really is because of the unavailability of the population during the evening hours.

Yeah, for sure...the hospitality industry and the convention industries being the two largest industries by far, I'm sure that is true.

You have massive hotels that would buy up tons of season seats.

I do think opposing team fans would plan trips around heading to Vegas to see their team.

I'm not sure if there are enough fans there to sustain a team. I don't know if this is 100% accurate, but I've always had the thought that fans in the SW just aren't hockey fans in general. Not all of them would pick it up if there were a team.

Wouldn't the heat in Vegas be too bad for an MLS team?

Just not 41 teams a year, season after season.

Not sure about that. Between gambling, dining and entertainment, the mega hotel/casinos are making their biggest bank during the same hours these hockey games are going to be played. Are casinos really going to comp guests with an event ticket that sends them outside of the casino during prime time?

I could see a few of the highest-end properties getting suites to entertain their whales, but I don't see the average property comping their average gambler with hockey tickets.
