I get your argument as a whole but, said euroleague MVP, Patrick Beverly, just finished playing 30+ min per game for a playoff team so that was pretty weak to bring up

Fair enough, but I was asking because I forgot who it was, lol. That was quite a long time ago and the argument now is similar

I know it may be a little crazy to be craving UDFAs (I'm sure Rowand/Kyyle will bring up my love for the "independent worker") but there a few half way decent guys still out there. Patric Young was a guy I thought for sure would be drafted and he makes some sense. If not him then there's 2 other massive centers out there in Jordan Bachynski (7'2") and Sim Bhullar (7'5") that would be very interesting to see what Thibs can do with..

Also wouldn't mind seeing Deandre Kane picked up as the #3 PG behind Rose/?.

Wouldn't mind bringing Young in as a project. Four years in Florida, I am sure Joakim has watched plenty of him and would push the FO to bring him him. I think he can excel as a defensive specialist off the bench under Thibs

And just for the record, I love the McDermott pick. If you had to draw up a Thibs player, this is it. He works hard, he hustles, he plays defense as hard as he can, and he can shoot. The guy is one of the best college shooters I can remember seeing. Even with entire defenses scheming around him, he can shoot. At the next level he will see better individual defenders, but not nearly the team defense he saw in college. He is going to get a lot of looks via Derrick Rose. And let's face it, the Bulls need SOMEONE who can score, and that is what this kid does. He scores. The Bulls didn't need another athlete who could jump through the ceiling, but had no skills. They didn't need another shutdown defender. They needed a scorer. They weren't going to get a top player in this draft because of where they were picking, but working up to get McDermott is a really nice get for them.

Nobody is arguing that the Bulls needed a scorer, some people just aren't sure that Dougie can score in the NBA.

On a sidenote, lets not forget that Thibs coached McDermott during Team USA drills last year so the Bulls really got to spend a lot of time with him (and evaluate him against elite NBA competition). For anyone that thinks there is a huge rift in our front office, this pick would not be indicative of that. Thibs sounded extremely excited about the pick and even talked up McD's defensive game and that he can play D (not sure I believe that or not yet) but don't underestimate that fact pattern too.

That I find completely preposterous. He will be able to score in the NBA. If you want to be worried, worry that he can't play D in this league. Maybe in the 80's when you could tackle he wouldn't be able to score but this guy can flat out score. Playing with someone like Rose who will create spacing (+ Melo) will allow plenty of spacing for him to score too.

His lack of defense is a little overblown IMO. He's not a lockdown guy, but I'm sure he can be serviceable. His role at Creighton was to stay out of foul trouble and hit shots, so his one-on-one defense was never emphasized. And it won't be for the Bulls since they play a defense that's about positioning on the court just as much as man-to-man principles.

He's also a guy that averaged 7.5 boards a game. So it's not like he's a perimeter-only player.

Ha I LOVED watching Doug in college. I had no reason to hate Creighton in his time since we were hot garbage.

Lmao, Brian said the same thing.

So can someone explain OKC's strategy. They have zero outside shooting surrounding Durant and Westbrook and you have solid interior players so you draft an interior player with your first pick and then a wing who can't shoot with your second pick? Dumb.

This made a lot of sense, and his rotation d was above average. But I hate that his development probably took a hit for that.

Based on what? Creighton was a horrible defensive team and McDermott gets no steals or block shots. I didn't watch them as much as some on this board so it could be true but there doesn't seem to be much evidence that McDermott played any defense at all.

Based on some metric somebody said showed that.

They were a horrendous defensive team all 4 years he was there and he was a big part of it. I'm actually not overly worried about that cause if Thibs is going to play him then he'll find a way to hide him on the defensive end.

And McDermott did indeed test better athletically than people thought he would but that's where you have to watch game film. He plays below the rim and doesn't blow by any one on dribble penetration. He's going to have to use his smarts and angles(which he's better at than anyone I've ever seen) to get his shot off and score in the league.

Thibs thinks McBuckets can become a decent defender. If they really didn't believe that , I doubt they pick him up.

He tested out a lot better athletically than probably most thought he would.

That he did. His vertical is actually higher than Rodney Hood and James Young, 2 guys some here would have rather had. His 3/4 sprint was also quicker than Hoods(Young did not compete).

Gary Harris, another guy most wanted, also gets knocked for his lack of athleticism didn't compete in any drills.

I agree with this. The combine type athletic testing is helpful but it doesn't always show up on the court and it never did for McDermott. It obviously wasn't at the NBA combine but Tyler Griffey always measured out as one of the most athletic players on Illinois during his time there but obviously he never showed any athleticism at all on the court.

He's got that Dirk fade on lock too.
