royoung
Spencer Adams, RHP Born 04/13/1996 6’5", 190 Throws: R Bats: R OVERVIEW/SCOUTING INFO Spencer Adams is an elite athlete with a tall and projectable frame. He could easily stand to add muscle, but at 18 he still has time to grow. He throws from a three-quarter arm slot with some deception, repeats his motion well, and has good raw arm strength. Adams throws a fastball, slider, change-up and has flashed a curve. This spring he touched 94-95 in early innings on his fastball, holding low 90's late into games. His slider is a legitimate out pitch, with tight spin and break, usually comes in between 83-86. His change-up is his weakest off-speed pitch, but he has shown some feel for it, and scouts believe with proper coaching it could evolve to an average offering. SCHOOL NOTES Adams was a three sport star (baseball, basketball, and football) at White Country High School in Cleveland, Georgia. His Junior year he worked primarily in the upper 80's and had good but not spectacular numbers. However, his Senior year the velocity spiked in the 90's and he dominated, posting a 0.72 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. SIGN/DRAFT The White Sox selected Spencer Adams with the 44th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He was ranked as the 24th best prospect by Baseball America and 27th best by MLB.com. Considered to be a tough sign, Adams signed at slot value which was officially announced on June 11th, 2014. MINORS Adams has been assigned to the Arizona League Rookie team but has at the time of this post has not pitched yet. Rduff12000
Newbie sox fan here. Just joined up. Became an instant sox fan when they selected my hometown boy Spencer Adams. You guys will love this kid. He is one focused individual while on the mound and one of the best kids I have been around off the mound. I still believe scouts have his control rated low and his slider a touch low. The slider is flat out nasty. Maybe not quite Rodon nasty, but nasty nontheless. Looking forward to following the Sox and Spencer this season. Plan on driving UP (lol) to Kannapolis a couple of times to watch Spence throw. Anyway, just wanted to chime in. newbiesoxfan

Thanks all. And yes, I'm blown away by the knowledge of MiLB/Sox farm system on this site. Growing up in N Ga, I'm a Braves fan (or was until they passed Spencer with the 32nd pick ), I thought I followed their farm system well. I'm not in the same ballpark with you guys. It was fun following Spencer as the draft was approaching. There was such a great pool of hs arms, someone was going to get bumped down and it happened to be him. What was interesting is the teams that showed so much interest in him, did not take him. The Braves have a history of taking local talent and liked him a lot, passed at the end of the first round. The Royals flew him out to throw in their park, pretty much told him they would take him if he was availabe, but didn't. The Blue Jays GM came to one of his HS games and raved about him but they went a different direction. Yet the Sox had very little conversation with him, but ended up drafting him. I'm not sure if the fact that he had a verbal with UGA scared some teams or maybe other players were available to these teams that they thought would be off the board. Anyway, it was interesting. Most scouts seem to have him as a 2-3 type starter. Being so young, I think its a guessing game. So many variables come in to play. Staying healthy, getting with the right pitching coach, learning that new pitch that can put him over the top.......etc. I know he has the tools/talent and the work ethic to get it done, so it will be fun to follow along. southsider2k5
The thing that keeps me most optimistic about Adams is that he doesn't seem as far away from his ceiling as other guys. Compare him to a guy like Montas, who has the stuff, but has a lot more to put together to make it, versus where Adams is at. For Adams the most important thing seems to be building innings up. Yeah, love Frankie's stuff but his body is even more worrisome than any command issues. If he was serious about a career as a pro athlete, I'd think he'd be motivated to get some of the weight off of his already balky knees.
royoung
Adams finishes his 2015 with a 2.99 ERA between 19 starts for the Kannapolis Intimidators and 5 starts for the Winston-Salem Dash. He struck out 96 batters to just 18 walks over 129.1 innings pitched. Adams is the consensus #3 prospect in the White Sox system across several prospect lists pre-season 2016.
