Feeky Magee
Designated for assigment by the Diamondbacks today. ERA of 6.59 on the year (in just 13.2 innings) but FIP of 3.52, xFIP of 3.72 and SIERA of 3.24. Decent groundball rate which seems to be a big Hahn thing for the bullpen. Owed $3.86m for the rest of the season, of which the Diamondbacks would presumably eat some. Well worth a go, imo.
witesoxfan
I think it'd be worth a shot if it's very, very cheap. His average fastball velocity is under 90 right now, so you hope there's not something wrong, but all the peripherals say that this is a no brainer. He'd seem likely to pass through waivers and thus become a free agent given that salary, so having the D-Backs eat some isn't the way that would go unless you try to trade for him. southsider2k5
If he is throwing 90, he is hurt again. Don't bother. Honestly, the bullpen is in pretty good shape, plus they are getting back Jones at somepoint, and it will feel like a trade for a top set up guy anyway. caulfield12
Yeah, he's more likely to be a Boggs than a Putnam at this point. When a team as bad as the DBacks are willing to give up on you...that says a lot. Then again, Webb hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire. But I don't think they're to the point with Daniel that sending him to Charlotte would be of any benefit to his career, for example, making him the full-time closer down there and seeing how he would respond (and since they lose 2/3 games, he wouldn't get so many opportunities anyway). lasttriptotulsa
While I like Putz, unless he learns to throw left handed I don't see a place for him. Putnam and Petricka have been pretty good. Belisario is pitching better than the numbers show and Carroll has been solid as the long man. The area we are lacking is a good lefty set up man and unfortunately Putz is not that. If he clears waivers and can be signed for the pro-rated minimum, why not? But other than that I would pass.
Chicago White Sox
Forgive my ignorance, but are FIP & xFIP really going to be predictive when using a 13 inning sample?

Well, maybe not, but if so, it means his ERA is equally non-predictive. Basically, what we know is that his performance hasn't "earned" him the ERA that got him DFA'd. As far as those numbers informing that he'll continue doing what he been doing from a FIP perspective, yeah we don't know.

I tend to agree with your general premise that these are not very good predictive measures at this point, but his other peripherals look hood too...other than the velocity. A flier wouldn't hurt anything, but he's 37. That velocity drop doesn't even have to be due to injury - it could simply be from natural wear and tear. To summarize, on a MLC contract with an opt out after a month, sure. He's not going to take that because some team will give him a shot. EDIT: Not editing. Just wanted gonads a comment: phones are awesome. His stats definitely look "hood.".

Balta1701
So here's what no one has said yet. He will have a choice of teams to go to based on the peripherals. At the very least he can probably fill a last guy out of the bullpen role for a contender. OTOH he had success coming back from an injury with the white sox previously. The White Sox aren't a contending team right now, so coming here would not give him the chance to contend, but he could decide he wants to work with our pitching coach again to see if he can find a groove that gets him 1-2 more seasons. It'll be whatever he wants.
Wanne
Just read this morning that after his release Putz said he hasn't been able to put his finger on his struggles. Said his arm felt great...felt great during long toss and playing catch with different pitches...but for some reason it just hasn't translated to the mound. Thinks it's just a mechanical issue that he/coaches are missing. If the Sox think they still have a run in them...I'd say he'd definitely be worth a flyer. elrockinMT
I don't have anything against JJ Putz but we wouldn't be having this conversation if our pitchers threw strikes. They issue way to many free passes and get us in trouble. Belisario as a closer has something like a nearly 7.00 ERA in the games he finishes and it seems the relief corps is always allowing base runners in the late innings. Dick Allen
What is the purpose of acquiring Putz? You can't trade him for anything and he won't be a part of the future.i will always be amazed at how popular other teams' crap is on this board. I know the whole doesn't cost much thing, Coop will fix him, and maybe there is a chance of that happening, but it is slim. And keep in mind, every minute Coop or the staff spend trying to fix these past their prime guys is a minute not spent on a player that might have a shot at helping the team. Hopefully someday, the Sox will have enough legit prospects where guys like Putz aren't thread-worthy. Why waste time trying to correct Putz as opposed to trying to develop one of the younger bullpen projects. Jones will bump someone out so I hope the younger relievers get to stay under Coop for development for the future. Putz would only bump another spot. Now if someone in the organization thinks Putz could be salvaged and used next year then that is a reason to consider it.
