Jake
There's only one stat to look for with Beck - strikeouts. He'll never cut it if he can't increase the strikeouts significantly
DirtySox
QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 06:17 PM) There's only one stat to look for with Beck - strikeouts. He'll never cut it if he can't increase the strikeouts significantly Yup. I still truly don't know what to make of him. Every now and them he'll pitch a game where it seems he's got the swing and miss stuff going. But then there are many other games where seemingly every single ball is put into play. ChiliIrishHammock24
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 06:21 PM) Yup. I still truly don't know what to make of him. Every now and them he'll pitch a game where it seems he's got the swing and miss stuff going. But then there are many other games where seemingly every single ball is put into play. From what we've heard, Beck has been told to work on certain pitches. Like he would go starts throwing entirely fastballs, or entirely change-ups or whatever. His promotion may because he has done well improving these pitches individually, and now they are ready for him to put it all together and throw whatever pitches he wants, when he wants. Like taking the training wheels off, essentially. I'm just speculating though based off what we've heard. His poor strikeout rate may be a result of that. I've read this as well from the Soxtalk people, but I'm still wary. I need to see some evidence that he has swing and miss stuff on a consistent basis before I can get on board. I think people fell in love with the Chris Beck draft pick and are somewhat ignoring the actual numbers to this point.

BlackSox13
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) Stoltz told me last night that a move to Birmingham may be beneficial to Hawkins not because not he deserves to play in AA, but because Birmingham is a very pitcher friend park vs. W-S which is very hitter heavy. Thinks it may help Hawkins learn to be a better hitter by not swinging for HR all the time. He thinks Hawkins skipping over Kanny was a mistake for that reason, park factor. I like the line of thinking on Hawkins. Hopefully the more spacious park will help Hawkins try to hit the gaps more leading to more doubles and triples and raise the batting average. In theory anyway.

BlackSox13
Also like to add that if May can keep hitting, he will be in Birmingham with Anderson and Hawkins next year.

I hope that's not the case. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 07:36 PM) Beck couldn't get out of the 5th. Not sure he was ready for AAA. Ouch! winninguglyin83
Jacob May at .252 with 22 stolen bases. Considering where he was about six weeks into the season ... he's scored 22 runs with month with an ops of .894. needs to improve his walks. Ozzie Ball
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 07:11 AM) 19-year-old Luis Martinez has 12 strikeouts in 8 innings (2 starts) for Arizona. Could be a prospect. He was a reasonable bonus guy, and Paddy's first signing, so hopefully. I liked the scouting report on him when he was signed. Sounded like good talent for the money. royoung
http://www.chicagonow.com/future-sox/2014/...is-hot-in-june/ Recap posted. Please forgive the cheesy headline. After looking into him, Jacob May is a fascinating prospect. He has good speed, plays a good center field by the accounts I read, and has shown pop. I will be interested to see how he progresses. harfman77
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 27, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) I think it also jives with the fact that the Sox have now promoted him to AAA. If the Sox were worried about this, he wouldn't be there yet. Looking at the Box from last night, looks like control issues affected Beck. He threw 96 (58 STR) pitches in 4.2 innings and walked four batters. Gave up 5 hits and struck out four. Could be a lot of issues that contributed to the problems so I am not too worried based on that start.
