Sox officially sign Rodon

Baseball America now reporting $6.582M for Rodon signing.

This puts them over the limit and into 75% tax penalty territory on the overage (by about 385k), but stays just/short of draft pick loss territory.

Also means Montes de Oca and Choplick almost assuredly won't be signed.

The interesting thing about that number is that you'd assume Boras was absolutely trying to get them into "forfeit the pick" territory, which would have been a fascinating (and terrible) precedent to set.

That Boras has some stones, can't take that from him.

I don't even think a ruthless guy like Boras would be pushing for them to forfeit a future pick. That is nuts, no team would ever do that. I am frankly shocked we offered that much. My guess is that Montes De Oca indicated he wasn't signable and we needed to get Rodon into the fold and create some goodwill with Boras.

If a club exceeds its SBP in a given Rule 4 Draft, a tax will be assessed and future Rule 4 Draft picks could be forfeited, depending on how much the club exceeded its SBP. (The club’s 1st Round draft pick in the next Rule 4 Draft is forfeited if the club exceeds its SBP by 5-10%, its 1st & 2nd round draft picks in the next Rule 4 Draft are forfeited if the club exceeds its SBP by 10-15%, and the club’s 1st Round picks in the next two Rule 4 Drafts are forfeited if the club exceeds its SBP by more than 15%).

So basically they can go over by 4.999999% and not get punished, but anything after that and not happening. No club is going to forfeit a 1st round pick, unless there is a compelling reason.

thank I appreciate the info.

now to look at it this way, the sox lost in the neg battle with Rodon and his camp.

however if you want to look at it with rose colored glasses, we won b/c we sign Rodon.

Well I saw 6.582 from BA, not 6.82. I would be BA's number is correct, because 6.82 puts them into pick-losing territory. Bruce must have mistyped.

That is just Bruce wishing Sox would lose 2015 pick.

Still waiting for official statement from Sox

True, but I doubt they'd let WhiteSox.com publish a story saying that terms have been agreed to without it being essentially done.

Please tell me Rodon is a righty. When is he due to join the rotation? What's the projected year of his arrival on the big league team?

No. He's a LHP. He's also a potential ace and will most likely be in the rotation at some point next season. Checkout some you tubes if you get a chance.

But if Boras had done ANY negotiating on his behalf, going back to college wouldn't be an option, would it? Signing an agent ends your college status, i thought. That would leave what, Independent league? Joliet Slammers?

NCAA lightened up on the baseball kids when it became apparent how anti-player their definition of amateurism was. Asking the kids to negotiate multi-million dollar contracts with industry experts with only the help of their parents is just a recipe for disaster. They could hardly access the regulations that governed their interactions with an agent without an agent to tell them what the rules were

All these years people have told me I was nuts when I would tell them society is all kinds of backwards. You my friend just confirmed they are the ones that are nuts.

So does the horse push the cart or the cart pull the horse?

Two of the best sliders in baseball pitching on the same staff is just sooo sexy!

Great nugget I heard tonight. They were asking upwards of 7. Thats what took so long.

That explains it. Thanks for the nugget.

It is pretty unfair, but they did nail someone last year for having an "advisor" get a little too involved when he returned to college. I think he got a suspension. And an article I read said the White Sox turned someone in for the same thing a few years ago.

If Rodon didn't sign and Boras was significantly involved, I would imagine there would have been some sort of issue. But that means nothing now.

Sometimes when you wander into threads, it is immediate gold
