They didn't have to. Rodon wasn't going to turn down $6M to go back to college, and if he was going to turn down $6M then he's an idiot and I don't want him.

It isn't so much just this signing as the precedent it sets. Now that the Sox have gone over slot once, every first round pick from now on is going to expect it. Setting a bad precedent.

They could have gone a little over, but if "over $6.45M" is accurate they caved too much to Boras and it sets a terrible precedent.

"More than 6.45 million"

Fantastic. I really don't care. A few hundred grand more or less, doesn't mean a difference to me and doesn't impact the Sox long-term either. Glad this got done and timing seems good as it means Rodon got a nice little break and now can slowly get worked in and get his feet wet. Unlike most, I still expect him to spend most, if not all of next year in the minors.

The precedent of Scott Boras wants a lot of money for his clients was set a long time ago. Yes I know that's not what you guys are talking about but that's all this is, this isn't going to hurt the Sox with future picks.

The Sox also made sure they had extra money left just in case something like this happened. There's no negative to this move at all.

Situations are different. This was the consensus #1 for most of the year and many still pegged him as that. Different circumstances. Every negotiation is unique.

Well, Rodon is the guy I wanted all along and I really expected the Sox to avoid drafting him because of Boras, so all in all I'm happy they signed him. I still didn't think it would be for that much over slot but if that's what it took, so be it.

Totally agree. I think the gap between drafting him and the signing sort of tamed my excitement, naturally, but had you told me on June 1st this was how the draft would work out I would have jumped on a couch cruise style.

John Manuel ‏@johnmanuelba 57m

Expecting definitive news on @CarlosRodon16 signing w/#WhiteSox today. Sox' bonus pool leaves max north of $6.5M http://www.baseballamerica.com/draftdb/?te...6&team=1026

I was tweeting back and forth with Manuel. He doesn't think the $6.45 million number is accurate. He thinks it's more than that.

I dont think its up to 6.8 but I thin its overslot. But really, he's signing so who cares at this point.

He was the best player in the draft and we've already seen Scott Boras take a potential number 1 who dropped back to college when he didn't get his asking price. I wouldn't want to try too hard to call his bluff

But if Boras had done ANY negotiating on his behalf, going back to college wouldn't be an option, would it? Signing an agent ends your college status, i thought. That would leave what, Independent league? Joliet Slammers?

MLB is different than the other sports I believe.

at which point will the sox get penalized for overspending

If a club exceeds its SBP in a given Rule 4 Draft, a tax will be assessed and future Rule 4 Draft picks could be forfeited, depending on how much the club exceeded its SBP. (The club’s 1st Round draft pick in the next Rule 4 Draft is forfeited if the club exceeds its SBP by 5-10%, its 1st & 2nd round draft picks in the next Rule 4 Draft are forfeited if the club exceeds its SBP by 10-15%, and the club’s 1st Round picks in the next two Rule 4 Drafts are forfeited if the club exceeds its SBP by more than 15%).

So basically they can go over by 4.999999% and not get punished, but anything after that and not happening. No club is going to forfeit a 1st round pick, unless there is a compelling reason.

Yes, if Boras had negotiated directly with the White Sox, Rodon would lose his amateur status. As an advisor though, he can talk to Rodon and any other parties involved on his behalf.
