If You're Bryce Montes De Oca...

If you're Bryce Montes De Oca and were just drafted by the Chicago White Sox last month and also have a commitment to Missouri baseball, a top SEC program, what would it take for you to sign and start playing professionally at 18? Yes I understand Montes De Oca will likely never step foot in the White Sox organization but I'm just wondering what it would take (money and otherwise) for him to not go to Missouri, where he can prove himself and make more money in 3 years, gain an education, and maybe even an SEC title or award, and rather go to Camelback Ranch and for him to start his career as a ChiSock and start climbing the ranks to the Show, earning money, playing professionally, and learning from Coop every Spring. Anyways, best of luck to this kid, wouldn't mind drafting him in 2017 if he can really prove himself.

The money Sox could offer just isn't worth it. Had he said he was interested in getting drafted he would have gotten a lot more. he needs very close to 7 figures to really have a legit shot at signing him. We can offer a whopping 100K, which after taxes, etc, will be closer to 60K. Yes, he'd still get a free education, but if he is a top 10 round pick, he'll get more then that anyway, with potential for a lot more upside.

I'm a huge advocate for taking the money but the money Sox can offer isn't right here.

It's a risk/reward type of thing. He was thought of as a 2nd rounder but teams were scared off by his medicals and commitment to Mizzou. If he stays healthy, big if, he has the stuff to go in the first round. If he goes in the middle of the first round, he'll get 2.5 million and he'll have the perks and excitement of attending school and playing college ball. I believe it gets understated, but when you are in the low minors life isn't all that glamorous. Compare that to being the big man on campus at an SEC school, being the Friday night starter pitching in front of packed stadiums with crazy fans, I can understand the appeal. If you can get more money and enjoy the college experience, can you fault him for wanting it all?

All that being said, if he gets hurt in college he will end up with next to nothing and he's already had Tommy John once.

I don't think many people know that, I live right near the Phillies A team in NJ and I see how these guys live, it's not glamorous at all, but being a young guy with no immediate family chasing the dream with great ball players has to be a dream come true...off topic, I know, but I think life in the Independent leagues is even worse, horrible life style, horrible benefits...thanks for pointing this out Hitman

LOL at Mizzou being a top SEC baseball program (and I went to Mizzou)

I just said SEC school, not a top SEC baseball program. :P

Surely they can fill the baseball stadium for his starts?

I don't know - it reads top SEC program.

A guy like this could have gone to any public college he wanted to. he could have gone to a true "top SEC program" if he wanted. So whether it's top or not is not an issue.

It's the guys who get full rides to the private schools that buying out the tuition is the real issue. But there aren't many of them that do have full rides to the private schools.

Otherwise, some guys just want to go to college. It's a more rounded life, and really a better life. It's just probably not as good for your specific development as being a baseball player.

Personally, at $500K bonus and up, I'd go to the minors. Less than that, I'd choose college. if I had no interest in college, but got less than a $100K bonus, I'd go to a junior college and try to get re-drafted.

A person that works with the baseball team apologized to people in my class for having to cover such a god awful team.

I couldn't care less if he chose Mizzou or Utah State or if Mizzou is a top or bottom school, he picked the school and it's completely understandable to be excited to play college ball.

Agreed. There is no way he takes the 100k. The Sox lost their chances of singing Montes de Oca when Rodon got the well above slot deal (and Rodon should have been the priority anyways). If Rodon had signed for around slot I think the Montes de Oca would have had a really hard time turning down what the Sox could have offered.

Yeah, they've been awful in recent years. Has nothing to do with the move to the SEC. They were trending south in recent years regardless. They had three MLB pitchers in the same era with Scherzer, Crow and Gibson so I was hoping that would draw in more pitching prospects like Montes de Oca, but they've only had slim pickings.

If I already had Tommy John at a young age, I would sign with the Sox and not take the risk of injuring myself again in college.

Same here as a Sox fan, but I'd need significant money, almost 500,000 to be honest to be satisfied

while I would have been extremely happy to get Bryce signed, lets be honest, there are prospects

that went back to school to strengthen their position and then reenter the draft. Bryce is but another

who will do it, who knows what will happen in the future.

In this instance, I don't blame him at all. $100k is, relatively speaking, not a ton of money and holds less intrinsic value than the education (not sure if I should "quote" that) he will get at Mizzou. Assuming his arm stays attached, he'll get another shot if he wants to pitch professionally.
