Brady Aiken DID NOT SIGN

I don't really understand what the Astros are doing here. If they can't sign Aiken then they don't have enough $$ to sign their 2nd round pick because of losing the slot amount for the #1 pick. What happens if Aiken doesn't sign? Can he become a free agent right away? If so, I bet Aiken would receive $20+ million on the open market and I would hope that the White Sox would be involved.

He just goes to college if he doesn't sign.

Which is pretty dumb IMO. I believe he has to wait 2 years and with how hard he throws it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he meets tommy john in those 2 years and doesn't end up getting close to what he could have got this year.

The Astros have a ton to lose here.

I don't believe that is an option since he signed a professional contract which was negotiated by an agent. I think he will file a grievance and aim to become a free agent similar to Barrett Loux.

Zero chance of him becoming a free agent. If they allowed him to become a free agent that would set a dangerous precedent.

If they made him a formal offer during the allotted time frame, he can't become a FA.

"there is now a provision that if a player fails a physical and the team fails to offer him 40 percent of the assigned value of his pick, he becomes a free agent. In that case, the club's draft cap would be reduced by the value of his selection. Loux was declared a free agent after a similar situation in 2010."

EDIT: Slot value is 7,922,100 and they reportedly offered 3.1 million would would be below 40%. However, I don't see why they wouldn't just offer exactly 40% and avoid this.

EDIT: 3,168,840 is exactly 40%. Crafty Astros

The Astros are offering him far below 40% of the slot value for the #1 pick.

JULY 15: The Astros believe that Aiken’s MRI revealed a “significant abnormality,” Major League sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Aiken’s adviser, Casey Close of Excel Sports Management, tells Rosenthal that the team has made just one revised offer — a bonus of $3,168,840. That amount represents the minimum bonus Houston would need to offer in order to receive the second pick in next year’s draft as compensation.

They are offering him exactly 40% of the slot.

$7,922,100 X 40% = $3,168,840.

Aiken doesn't throw THAT hard.

This is obviously from a Cubs perspective.

This one is from Ken Rosenthal.

This story is fascinating. Houston is offering just enough to ensure that they will receive the #2 pick next year regardless. The problem is that it screws up their entire draft. If he doesn't sign, I believe that Aiken should go the Independent League route. He could re-enter the draft next year and get his career started.

But if he goes the IL route, ends up having TJ during the IL season, his value drops much more. It's risky on both sides, Astros are covering their ass by offering him the mandatory 40%.

What are the possibilities that the Astros are calling this significantly abnormal when it's really just a minor tear or something to attempted to save themselves an incredible amount of money? Yes, I'm aware how incredibly unethical and illegal that is.

On the flip side, if Aiken has had an independent physical done and there is something incredibly wrong with him, he'd be insane not to take the money at this point.

Sounds like Houston is taking advantage of an unfortunate situation with Aiken for the sake of being cheap. I understand Houston's concern but aren't possible elbow problems the reason why kids are told not to throw breaking balls while their body is still growing? Aiken does have a pretty damn good curve ball for a high school pitcher. I don't remember the soxtalk members name right now but he would know better than I as for kids throwing breaking balls.

Would Aiken be allowed to sit out next season and then become a free agent?
