Future Catcher

Every contending team has a legitimate catcher, which means the Sox need a nice young one, how do we get his, FA is poor and drafting one takes too long, our top Catching prospects are probably Phegley, Smith, and Austin but I don't see a close legitimate option, how do we acquire one? Trades I assume, I'd move Danks to NYY for O'Brien/Sanchez and a s*** pitcher if possible, hell I may be outta my mind or maybe just desperate but I'd even look to swap Tim Anderson for Kevin Plawecki of NYM, Flowers shows flashes but he's not the future

It's pretty tough to get a young catcher that

A. Will be pretty decent and stick at catcher as long as the team would like

B. Won't cost you a couple top prospects since they are very rare.

I know I didn't offer a real solution, but I'm pretty confident in saying Hahn is exploring every possible option to get a serious C prospect in the mix.

I'm hoping we can somehow wind up with a Peavy like return this year, a long term franchise cornerstone and maybe some future depth, great deal

Catchers are probably the toughest position to find. There are only so many Posey's, Molina's, and Lucroy's around

If you want a comprehensive read on the catching prospects currently in the system (minus Brett Austin who was added after I wrote this), give this post a read on FutureSox.

By way of updates, since that was written, Brett Austin was drafted in the 4th round but is likely at least a couple years away. Jose Barraza has apparently started figuring it out, but he's even further off.

You think he's the future? Hell no

The kid should be playing in AA this year. The fact that he hasn't looked totally overmatched this year is a good sign that either he is going to be a good player, or that Ventura and staff have done an incredible job at protecting him.

i have no idea if he is, but he has held up pretty well so far and was a nifty acquisition; and I do know that if the Sox go around chasing someone that they will hope to be Buster Posey, they will waste a lot of resources.

The usual suspects are those 3 Yankee catchers, but given that a)they signed McCann despite those top catching prospects and b)they still have yet to move any of them, my guess is that their is a lot of counterfeit stuff among those 3 or none of them are particularly great.

I'm very content with a good defender who plays mediocre offense.

If they don't see Nieto as the future I think the more realistic trade would be Lexi for Sanchez+ in the offseason. I've been a huge Danks supporter but I'd be a little surprised if they can get Sanchez for him. JRM just doesn't excite me.

If they think Neito has a chance in a year then Martin/Suzuki make sense for a year.

Sanchez is one of those guys that scares me a little. He's been a ranked prospect for 4 years, but is in AA. He hasn't had a AA year with an ops out of the 700s. And he's slowly dropping in top prospect lists. But if his defense is + that would be more settling.

Nieto has surprised me. I thought he would be like watching a pitcher hit this year. And the coaching staff has done a great job protecting him.
