Just sign him in the off-season without having to give up anything of value. If you think Danks has been bad, Masterson has been awful.

One year plus option? Maybe Coop can fix him and get him back on track.

Random question, but now that Masterson has been traded, the Cardinals can't receive draft compensation if he signs with another team next year correct?

NO they do not get comp picks if he leaves.

Probably not much of a chance they'd make him a qualifying offer anyway.

Masterson will be a true free agent without compensation attached now. He's a guy that the White Sox could realistically sign without giving up a draft pick.

I think we can get a similar return for Danks or maybe better if we take some salary

Which the White Sox almost never do...unless you count $1 million for Rios. Or Linebrink.

But 90% of the time, they would rather save the money and forgo the prospects.

There's no way the Indians would have made him a QO anyway.

I think they surely would have. Masterson on a one year deal at ~$14M is a decent gamble to return to form, and if he declines you get a shot at a first round pick.

To be fair though, the Sox have traditionally pushed the upper limits of the payroll as well. Since spending has been scaled back, it is conceivable that there is money to send along in the right deal.

Well, we should eat some salary. The payroll's lower than norm this year and probably will be next year.

No no no, the first rule of being a white sox fan is thinking that a comparable deal can be had only to be told the million reasons why the very similar player is never as valuable as the other player that was traded.

They did eat the Keppinger contract, though. That's at least on a small scale a willingness to eat some cash.
