Any potential bad contract swaps out there for Danks?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there are any (read: not totally obscene Howard/Kemp deals) bad deals out there similar in size & scope to Danks' deal that we could potentially move for Danks?

Papelbon comes to mind I think, but he's making a lot and we'd need something else back (cash relief or a player IMO). Maybe Marlon Byrd? Is League still bad with the Dodgers?

I'm thinking about a useful player we could acquire for the OF, pen, etc. that would still open up the Road to Rodon. Who is out there? And again, nothing all that crazy because Danks at worst is probably about a $5M per year overpayment over a 2 year span, so at worst we are looking at something like a $10M overpayment in total from 2015-16.

Also I want to point out that I like Danks a lot as a person and a player, this is just a baseball/contracts/Rodon type of thing. Danks is a solid dude and I wish him the best wherever he goes.

I'd be real surprised if Rodon is up before the trade deadline next season. I'd keep Danks till then. He becomes less expensive, and thus more valuable. Come the trade deadline next year he'll be due what, like 18M? Sox would be in better position to throw in money to make that contract look a lot better.

We don't want Papelbon -- he's a total jerk and would probably block the trade anyway. Marlon Byrd actually has value, Ruben Amaro is clinically insane, and Byrd said he'll only allow a trade is his option is exercised. There's Ethier, but we need a bad pitcher more than bad OF.

And why would we want a reliever that is owed as much as Danks is (very close to it anyway)? That is just shortsighted.

BJ Upton is still owed a lot of money, more than Danks and he leads the ML in K's, is 30 soon ,and hitting under .220 .On the plus side the Braves really really want to get rid of him. Probably willing to eat a big chunk of the contract . He still runs fast and plays an average+ CF. Makes about the same as Danks but with 1 more year . He is however not LH and has a rep for dogging it. Evan Longoria got on him for not hustling back when he was playing for the Rays. He's slugging .335 and OPS is .619 . Has a pretty good throwing arm . Supposedly has all the talent in the world and this board has pined for him for a long time.

I'm not recommending we go after him for Danks. I'm just throwing his name out there as a bad contract match up like you were looking for.

Just get him some magic glasses and we're good to go.
