LittleHurt05
Hamels couldn't be traded until the offseason though, right?
Dick Allen
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) Hamels couldn't be traded until the offseason though, right? Correct.
Donny Lucy's Avocado Farm
Even after the trade deadline, the Phillies have had a scout in Boston, St. Louis, and Anaheim watching Boston’s young players. The match would be Cole Hamels for young players, and it may very well heat up this offseason. ya looks like an offseason trade.
Chisoxfn
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) Hamels couldn't be traded until the offseason though, right? Technically, I presume he hasn't been placed back on waivers as the Phils would risk losing him for nothing, but in theory they could have done it, although I am 99% sure that isn't the case. witesoxfan
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) Why is that? He was already put on waivers, the Cubs put a claim on him, and the Phillies pulled him back.

See my post above. Technically they could put him back on unconditional waivers, however, like I also said, 99% sure they won't do that with the risk since the Cubs (and other teams in the NL) would presumably make a claim prior to Hamels making it to Boston. Kyyle23
Really it doesnt matter when he is traded, neither team will benefit this season from the trade. They are just laying the groundwork and as soon as they can, the deal will be made. Interesting though. Boston could already be replacing Lester because they feel he is headed to the Cubs

harfman77
This makes sense for Boston as they are going to have a hard time protecting all of their rule V eligible guys on the 40 man roster. Blake Swihart, Matt Barnes, Sean Boyle, and Eduardo Rodriguez are all top 20 guys that will need a 40 man spot, they do have 4 FA's at the end of the season, but want to re-sign two of them in Ross and Uehara. So shipping out multiple prospects in a deal for a player makes a bit of sense to clear some 40 man roster spots and acquire an elite player without having to overspend in the FA market. Jose Abreu
Who says it has to be Hamels? Can't it also be a Papelbon return to Boston?
iamshack
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 12, 2014 -> 01:44 PM) Who says it has to be Hamels? Can't it also be a Papelbon return to Boston? Doubtful that the Phillies would be heavily scouting the Red Sox if it was for Papelbon...it has to be someone who would actually demand a return. Kyyle23
I also think Boston is happy with their current closer who makes a fraction of what Papelbon makes

And doesn't Uehara's contract expire sooner, too?
caulfield12
Uehara's a free agent and nearing age 40, but will probably get a two year offer with year 3 being a club option or one where he'd have to meet a number of incentives for it to kick in. http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb...a_in_for_1_more Can't imagine they'd have any interest in Papelbon, unless taking on his contract could protect some of the prospects being inquired about by other teams in Hamels discussions.
