Vance Law
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) Not really. A rule 5 pick has to spend a large majority of the season on the active roster, otherwise their roster requirements carry over to the next year. It is actually only 90 days. So Saladino missing time on the DL actually makes him more attractive. A team with no plans on contending could certainly managed to have him as a utility infielder for 90 days. LDF
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 09:57 PM) Those roster requirements aren't necessary until after the postseason is over. If they wanted to speed up the process, they could certainly DFA a few of these guys, but there's no rush for that. do you or anyone else think that the sox will cut their ties on Mitchell and Thompson? Vance Law
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 2, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) But I just find it hard to believe any team would select Tyler Saladino at all, and certainly not when he's going to miss at least a month and has had TJ surgery. He's a DFA guy for me, I just don't see any significant claim risk with him. Would you be interested in a 24 year old shortstop who put up an .850 OPS in half a season at AAA if it meant playing him less than Leury Garcia played this year? ChiliIrishHammock24
I wonder when we get our PTBNL from the Gordon Beckham trade. Maybe it's contingent on how far the Angels go in the playoffs, or how much Beckham contributes.

I know he is young but really should that hold him back?

He only pitched 81 innings this year, I wouldn't add that mental stress to his possible physical stress as well. Start him off in AA next year and hope he can end in AAA. Not this one. Not a SS who has to be a utility guy and is coming off TJ surgery, making me wonder about how he'll handle throws that first year back. And will miss some time at the beginning of the year, forcing me to burn an option or signing early on then drop someone. And who had two straight mediocre years before turning it around this year. And who has shown he needs adjustment time, so he'll likely be pretty awful with the bat as a minimal-time player. Not to mention it forces me to not use him as often as I'd like to use a utility INF. By the way he's 25 and will turn 26 during next season. He's extremely low risk to be claimed, in my view. He has some talent, but with the logjam already developing in the White Sox infield, it's also likely not a huge loss to the Sox if he is claimed by someone. He's not going to take a 3b spot, he's not going to take a 2b spot, the only place he could be really useful is SS, and that's blocked by an expensive veteran. Only caveat to that is if Alexei is traded, then he could well rapidly become needed.

He's not a big loss, but if they trade Alexei, you really want a guy like him in AAA just in case. And he does have some talent, I'd like to see him stay. He probably will.
