Without getting into the one vs. the other, one of the true problems with ALS is that the medical community cannot figure it out. There have no significant advances since the time that Lou Gehrig died. Hopefully this new fund raiser gives the research a jump start and people with ALS hope. That could actually be a reason why awareness campaigns are even more important. They have 1.2 million first time donors since the challenge started, so he isn't alone either. It is way better than pretending he had always done this. As someone who is the President of a small not-for-profit organization, I can tell you first hand that a phenomenon like this is something that is dreamed about. Usually donations like this only follow tragedy. If this makes a few people feel good about themselves, all the better. Maybe that feeling will carry into future philanthropy.
